Visionary Leader Header
Dear Reader,

We live in complicated times. The tragic events of last week have marked our hearts with horror and sorrow, and, as a nation, we continue to struggle to grasp what happened in Newtown, Connecticut and understand a world in which such a senseless violence could take so many innocent lives. I appreciated the article in the Washington Post this week that remembered the wisdom of Fred Rogers (Mr. Rogers) who once shared his mother's wisdom in the face of tragic events -- to notice all the good people, the helpers, doing all they can to help others.

Last Friday morning, Meg Wheatley spoke to the coaches at the Georgetown's Graduate Coaching Conference via video include link. Drawing on themes from her most recent book, So Far From Home, the famous writer and systems theorist called for us to be "warriors for the human spirit" bringing compassion and bravery to the world and operating in the "place beyond hope and fear." Meg's words were prescient as we eventually learned the day's heartbreaking news. Like many of my clients, family and friends, I will end the year reflecting not only upon my own contributions and intentions for 2012, but also about how I can be a warrior for the human spirit in 2013 and beyond.  I invite you to view the video keynote here.

Tomorrow is the longest night of 2012 -- the winter solstice -- and, according to Mayan foretelling, the end of an Age.  May the New Year bring new ways of coming together and of being a part of the family of life. Thank you for your support and the good efforts you made in your own life and community this year. I hope you will connect with your heart which is the home of your compassion and courage as you prepare for the New Year.

Very best wishes to you,

Ringing Out the Old Year and Envisioning a New Year with Leadership Coach Bette George

(Special encore presentation from last December)  Bette George

The New Year always invites us to make bold resolutions and start anew. Yet, year after year, how many of us look at the year behind with some regret, vaguely remembering our faded resolutions? Join Host Kate Ebner and her wise friend, Leadership and Life Coach Bette George for a conversation about how to close this year and begin 2012 with a strong sense of purpose, renewal and direction. Kate and Bette will explain why New Year's resolutions often don't work and will show you how to use visioning to bring new energy and possibilities to your life in the year ahead. You will enjoy the guidance and resources provided to make the upcoming year your best ever. This show is a "visioning how-to" with a focus on 2012.

How Was Your 2012?

Christmas bells Last year, Kate Ebner and her colleague and friend, Bette George, offered a December radio show that gave listeners an understanding of how to use the power of intention for a purposeful and fulfilling year. This week, Kate and Bette reunited on the radio to report back on how they did with their 2012 intentions and share new ideas on how to ring out the old year and bring in the new. The two leadership coaches also spoke about the larger context that surrounds us as we think about our own personal intentions in a world that holds joy, conflict, tragedy and inspiration.

As Bette and Kate reflected on 2012, they noted how helpful it had been to talk with each other periodically about the intentions they set for 2012. This positive support, encouragement and accountability made a big difference. Bette' intention was to be connected and full of presence w the people in her life and also to the Earth while Kate's 2012 intention was to "choose ease." How closely did Bette and Kate follow their 2012 intentions? Click here to find out.

This year, Bette and Kate offered a method for ringing out the "old year" using a framework derived from the work of poet and author, David Whyte, whose book, The Three Marriages, inspired this exercise.  The approach helps you assess how you did in the most important parts of your life using Whyte's concept of the three marriages:

  1. Marriage to Another
  2. Marriage to Worl
  3. Marriage to Self
We invite you to the show to learn the methodology for this exercise, and then, consider setting four intentions for your New Year -- one for each domain:  mind, body, emotion and spirit.   On Visionary Leader, Extraordinary Life, Bette coached Kate live on air to express her intentions for the new year.

Listen to the interview  to hear those intentions and learn how to set your own.

Sometimes

Sometimes

if you move carefully

through the forest

breathing

like the ones

in the old stories

who could cross

a shimmering bed of dry leaves

path forest

without a sound,

you come

to a place

whose only task

is to trouble you

with tiny

but frightening requests

conceived out of nowhere

but in this place

beginning to lead everywhere.

Requests to stop what

you are doing right now,

and

to stop what you

are becoming

while you do it,

questions

that can make

or unmake

a life,

questions

that have patiently

waited for you,

questions

that have no right

to go away.
