Kissing.  It's just something we do.

Greetings!
Valentine's Day is a great time to think about the things that fill our hearts with affection.  Like the photography of Mary Dobbs.  "You don't take photos with a camera," says photographer Arnold Newman on her website. "You take them with your heart."   I suppose horse whisperer Buck Brannaman would say you don't train horses with fancy equipment either. Whisper with your heart, and they'll hear you.  The same is true with writing.  The best stuff comes from the heart.  So Happy Valentine's Day, and I hope you enjoy this little sampling of affection.

Kissing a Horse by Robert Wrigley

Here are two of my favorite things
 to share during the
Literature & Landscape of the Horse
Retreat in Wyoming every June...
Robert Wrigley's poetry and
Buck Brannaman's horse stories.

Mary captured this intimate moment, which she calls "Mustang Prayer," right before the Extreme Mustang Makeover auction, when this cowboy knew the horse he had gentled and befriended would be sold to a new owner.   The photo on the right is a beautiful portrait of Claire and Noah, her sorrel horse and best friend.

    PERU: WEAVING WORDS & WOMEN
The ancient, the sacred, the beautiful.

I developed a genuine affection for this fine old caballero and how he loved his Peruvian Paso horses.  Here, at his old rancho near Ollaytantambo, he shows us the gentleness of his prize gelding.  When we smiled and asked him questions in our meager Spanish, he laughed and came alive, showing us all the trophies his horses had earned  before the terrible days of the Shining Path took his livelihood and life's calling from him.

There's still space available for the April 2013 trip.  12 wonderful days.
