Antelope-brush Property

Good News from the Okanagan!

Good news! Thanks to many supporters, The Nature Trust of BC completed the first phase of its fundraising campaign for the last piece of the Antelope-brush Conservation Area. Land conservation takes patience and commitment. This has been a 17-year project.

Protecting critical habitat is urgent, especially in the South Okanagan.

  • Antelope-brush is one of the four most endangered ecosystems in Canada
  • This habitat is disappearing at a faster rate than the world's tropical rain forests
  • The South Okanagan has one of the highest concentrations of species at risk such as the Behr's Hairstreak butterfly
  • This property has connectivity to other conservation areas; providing greater opportunity for species to adjust to climate change

We are now turning our efforts to the final phase of this campaign, which will conclude in 2016. If you would like to learn more about how you can help, please contact Deb Kennedy at

 Salmon River Treasure

Largest Steelhead on Vancouver Island

The Nature Trust of British Columbia is working to secure 67 hectares (165 acres) along the lower Salmon River and estuary. Located north of Campbell River on Vancouver Island, this property will complement the adjacent 104 hectares (257 acres) already secured by The Nature Trust and our partners since 1978. The new property will allow a larger, contiguous area of protection.

This strategic location provides critical habitat to numerous species of fish and wildlife, including Great Blue Heron, Marbled Murrelet, Northern Pygmy Owl, Roosevelt Elk as well as Coho, Chinook, Chum, Pink and Sockeye. The area is also home to sea run Cutthroat Trout, Dolly Varden Char and it boasts the largest Steelhead on Vancouver Island!

We are asking for support from those who love the great outdoors and want to save critical habitat for future generations. With current funding commitments, we need to raise $162,500 by June 26, 2015. Please consider a donation online, by calling 604-924-9771 or toll free 1-866-288-7878.

Brant Wildlife Festival

Thank you to the many individuals and organizations that helped with the 25th Brant Wildlife Festival on Vancouver Island.

The festival celebrated nature, particularly the amazing migration of Brant geese as they rest and feed on the shores of Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Events ranged from herring spawn tours and wildlife viewing to guest speakers and kids nature camp. The festival was made possible by volunteer tour leaders and guest speakers, especially the Arrowsmith Naturalists, Friends of French Creek, and VIU Deep Bay Marine Field Station.

The Nature Trust of BC coordinated the festival with sponsorship from BC Hydro, Beach Club Resort, City of Parksville, Lohn Foundation, and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
