Silas Bronson Library to Host May Events (May 4th & 12th)
Master puppeteer Sarah Nolen returns to the Silas Bronson Library Children's Room on Wednesday, May 4, at 6:00pm for a fun, interactive shadow puppet show performance of "Lisa the Wise," based on a Russian folktale. Sarah Nolen is a puppeteer and filmmaker from Austin, Texas. She has a Masters of Fine Arts Degree in Puppetry from the University of Connecticut, as well as a bachelor's degree in Cinema-Television from Southern Methodist University. During her time at SMU, she also created a second, interdisciplinary degree in Children's Educational Television. With these two disciplines, Sarah hopes to carve out a career in children's educational media for children that is both entertaining and empowering! Then, on Thursday, May 12, Local author Charles Monagan will be discussing his new book, a fictional biography of Waterbury's legendary Carrie Welton, starting at 6:30pm. Admission and evening parking are free. Carrie Welton is best remembered in Waterbury for the fountain on the Green, which was modeled after Knight, Welton's favorite horse. A wealthy heiress, Welton was one of only a handful of women mountain climbers during the 19th century. Charles Monagan has been a writer and editor for more than 45 years. He worked as the editor of Connecticut Magazine from 1989 until 2013. Most recently, Monagan wrote the book and lyrics for a musical, "Mad Bomber," about another Waterbury historical figure. www.bronsonlibrary.org 

Howard-Whittemore Library May Programming (May 22 & 25)
The Howard-Whittemore Library in Naugatuck has announced some great events throughout the month of May. On Sunday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m., join in for Anthony Riccio: Italian Immigrant Experience in Connecticut. Riccio, author of The Italian American Experience in New Haven and Farms, Factories and Families: Italian American Women of Connecticut, will discuss the history, culture, and stories of the Italian migration to Connecticut. Signed books available for purchase. Italian desserts served following presentation. The following Wednesday, May 25, 6:30 p.m., enjoy 4 Raptors Visit from Horizon Wings. Four feathered ambassadors from a raptor rehabilitation center will be on hand for you to meet. Learn more about the habitats, lifestyles, and challenges facing birds of prey in our region.  The library will also be offering basic computer instruction in May and June for those who seek technology skills. Want to learn how to use the internet, e-mail, or type documents? Classes are held on Mondays at 10:30 a.m and are sponsored by a generous grant from the Connecticut Community Foundation. Connecticut Junior Republic 15th Annual Scholarship Dinner (June 2nd)
The Connecticut Junior Republic (a private, non-profit organization dedicated to helping youth) is proud to announce its 15th Annual Scholarship Dinner on Thursday, June 2nd from 6:00pm-8:00pm. The event will be held at at La Bella Vista, 380 Farmwood Road, in Waterbury. The scholarship diner is one of CT Junior Republic's most celebrated events in Waterbury as it showcases the successes of both past and present youth that are going on to college, trade school or the military. There are two ways to donate- purchase a $30 ticket for the event which includes dinner and entertainment or purchase space in the ad/sponsor book. 2nd Annual Ronald Perille Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament (June 17th)
In honor of Ron Jr's. memory, the Perille family has scheduled the 2nd Ronald Perille Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament on Friday, June 17, 2016 at the Southington Country Club. All proceeds will go to the Ronald Perille Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund. Two deserving high school students will benefit from the tournament. The tournament will take place at the Southington Country Club, 150 Savage Street in Plantsville. Registration and putting contest begin at 9:30 with a shotgun start at 11:00am. Are you Dense MusicFest! (June 18th)
Direct from Las Vegas Justin Shandor, named The World's Ultimate Elvis by Graceland, will make a rare East Coast appearance on June 18, to benefit the breast health non-profit organization Are You Dense, Inc. Joining Justin on stage, along with his band, will be Prospect native Vincent Ingala on drums! Doors open at 6:00 pm with silent auction, raffle and musical entertainment. Show begins at 7:15pm. Are You Dense Inc was founded by Woodbury Resident Nancy Cappello after her advanced breast cancer diagnosis, in spite of never missing her annual mammogram. Its mission is to educate the public about the impact of dense breast tissue on missed, delayed and advanced-stage breast cancer. Howard Whittemore Library Seeks Donors for Mini-Golf Tournament
The first annual Howard Whittemore Memorial Library mini-golf community event, "Tee-Off for Technology", is coming to the Library in June.  The library will become an 18-hole miniature golf course, with the course set up throughout the building. Players of all ages will putt their way through the library.  An "adults over the age of 21" event will be held on Friday evening June 17, 2016 from 6:00-9:00 pm and a "family-oriented" event will follow on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from 10:00 am- 2:00 pm. 
The Friday evening event will feature light refreshments , a trophy presentation to the best golfer and a silent auction as part of the "19th hole".  The library is seeking donations for the silent auction that evening. Gift certificates for free or discounted services will support the Library and provide a marketing opportunity for your business - all donors will be recognized in the event program.  Some suggestions are real estate appraisals, wills, tax return preparation, home and personal services, and local gift certificates. Please contact Marilyn Schiaroli at marilyns@biblio.org  by  Friday, June 3,2016 to arrange for your donation.  This will also assure that you are included in the Friday evening program. Main Street Waterbury Earns Main Street Award of Excellence
Main Street Waterbury has been selected as this year's winner of the Events and Programming Award of Excellence by Connecticut Main Street Center. Main Street Waterbury is being recognized for excellence in their Holiday Window Display Competition. Created in 2003 to recognize outstanding projects, individuals and partnerships in community efforts to bring traditional downtowns and neighborhood commercial districts back to life, socially and economically, the Awards of Excellence are presented annually at CMSC's Awards Gala. This year's awards will be presented on June 6th at E.O. Smith High School in downtown Storrs, and will be followed by interactive experiences in the new Storrs Center.  Activities will include guided tours of the downtown development, a collaboration with the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, time for dinner and exploration among the Center's many shops and restaurants, and a closing concert featuring the Funky Dawgs Brass Band. Meals on Wheels needs your help. Plagued with a waiting list and over-serving beyond budget, Meals on Wheels is looking for businesses to sponsor a day of meals for homebound seniors living in the Central Naugatuck Valley region. For a $2,500 tax-deductible donation, your business can provide 350 seniors with two meals. Meals on Wheels will place your business's name on each meal and provide your business with a free advertisement and space on a Meals on Wheels truck for three months. In addition, a photo will be taken of your staff with the Meals on Wheels truck and an ad featured in one of our monthly newsletters that reaches 2,000 people in the region. Profnet Offering Two $500 Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
ProfNet, the Professional Networking Group of Waterbury, is offering two $500 scholarships to graduating high school students. The scholarships are open to any graduating senior who will be continuing in an accredited course of higher education, and are not constrained by applicants' town of residence. Applications must be accompanied by a minimum 500 word essay on "What Higher Education Will do for my Future" and postmarked by May 31, 2016. The 43 members of the ProfNet meet weekly at 7:00 AM. Quilts that Care to Meet in May
Quilts that Care, an organization that makes quilts for people who undergo cancer treatment, will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 16 at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. The group will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 at the Bristol Public Library, 5 High St. The group will also meet from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays, May 4 and 18 at The Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Route 202, Litchfield. Currently, quilts are donated to eight Connecticut Hospitals, including The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, Saint Mary's VITAS, Bristol Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital. Donations of fabric shop gift cards, 100 percent cotton fabric, twin-size quilt backings, cotton flannel, quilting materials, and gallon Ziploc bags are being accepted. The donation of work and storage space would be gratefully accepted. Volunteers are being sought. Quilters are especially needed.
