Give Local Greater Waterbury & Litchfield Hills is a 36-hour online community giving event from May 3-4 that encourages donors to lend their support to the nonprofit organizations that work every day to make our community stronger. Every dollar donated to participating nonprofits from 7:00 AM on May 3 to 7:00 PM. on May 4 will be stretched with bonus funds provided by the Connecticut Community Foundation and generous Give Local sponsors. Quilts that Care Meet and Greet (April 7)
A Quilts that Care Meet & Greet will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. Thursday, April 7 at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Litchfield. Quilts that Care, Inc. is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that makes and donates quilts to cancer patients in Connecticut, including The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center in Waterbury, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Yale-New Haven Hospital and five other cancer facilities and hospices. Mission: Wrapping cancer patients and their families in comfort and hope, one quilt at a time. Learn about Quilts that Care. A variety of hand-crafted quilts will be on display. Complementary wine and cheese will be served. There will also be a chance drawing on a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted quilt. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted. Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries Wine & Beer Tasting (April 8) 
A Wine & Beer Tasting will be held at the Elks Lodge 265 located at 283 West Main Street in Waterbury to benefit the Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries. National Library Week at Silas Bronson Library
April 10-16 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the changing role of libraries, librarians, and library workers. April 11: Silas Bronson librarians will offer tours of the library. April 12: at 6:00 PM., the Children's Services Division will host a performance of Alice in Wonderland by The Hampstead Stage Company. Wednesday, April 13: at 3:00 PM local craft artist Ken Killer will demonstrate his use of a scroll saw to create wood ornaments out of Christmas tree trunks. April 14: at 3:00 PM, teens are invited to participate in a "Book Speed Dating"; at 6:00 PM, children ages 3 to 7 are invited to wear their pajamas and bring their favorite teddy bear to "Jamming in Your PJs" with music, songs, and stories. April 15: at 12:00 Noon, Director Rachael Guest will present an illustrated history of the Silas Bronson Library: the audience is encouraged to bring a bag lunch to the program; coffee will be provided. April 16: a full-day celebration in the Children's Room, where local civic and community leaders will read their favorite children's books. Crafts, face painting, and other fun activities will also be available all day in the Children's Room; 10:00 AM: Coloring Books for Grownups will launch; 11:00 AM: Director Guest will lead a special tour of the library's resources and art collection. 12:00 Noon: A workshop, Your Library Card Online, will show participants how to use their library card to access eBooks, research databases, and more; 1:00 PM: Jigsaw Puzzle Competition (register in advance at the Reference Desk). Connecticut Children's Medical Center Benefit Concert (April 17)
The 6th Annual Kenneth J. Pelton Fundraiser concert to benefit the Connecticut Children's Medical Center will be held April 17 at the Waterbury Elks Lodge 283 West Main Street in Waterbury. Musical acts will include Crosseyed Cat, Redline, Crash 21 and Sister Funk and the event will run from 12:00 Noon - 6:00 PM. $10 admission includes a buffet lunch, and tickets can be purchased from any band members or the Waterbury Elks Lodge in Waterbury. 

BMW of Watertown/Hoffman Auto Grand Opening Celebration (April 20)
Waterbury Regional Chamber members are invited to the BMW of Watertown Grand Opening celebration on Wednesday, April 20 from 5:00 - 8:00 PM. Hoffman Auto Group is pleased to be part of the greater Waterbury community and looks forward to a successful future and partnership in the years ahead. Waterbury Exchange Club 22nd Annual Beer & Wine Tasting (April 27)
The Waterbury Exchange Club Charitable Foundation Inc. will host their 22nd Annual Wine & Beer Tasting Fundraiser on Wednesday, April 27th from 5:30 to 8 PM at La Bella Vista, 380 Farmwood Rd in Waterbury. The Waterbury Exchange Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit service organization focused on the prevention of child abuse. This fundraising event is being chaired by Virginia O'Rourke Cookson of O'Rourke & Birch Flower Shop and Cathy Chaikowski of Webster Bank. Wine & Beer Tastings will be provided by Nutmeg Fine Wine & Spirits and Food Stations will be provided by La Bella Vista. Acts 4 Ministry Seeking Donations during "Give Local" Campaign
Acts 4 Ministry will participate in Give Local, the Connecticut Community Foundation's 36 hour online giving challenge to help local area non-profits raise funds. Acts 4 is seeking funds to support their 'sleep well' campaign to ensure all residents-in-need have a bed for restful sleep. Through donations Acts 4 received in the 2015 Give Local campaign, they provided 30 new bed sets. The organization welcomes donations year round, however, during Give Local, donations can help Acts 4 potentially receive bonus funds and cash prizes from the Foundation and their sponsors. Give Local will begin at 7 AM on Tuesday, May 3, and end at 7 PM on Wednesday. To contribute, please visit

Dr. Nancy Cappello of Are You Dense, Inc., to Keynote National 
Meeting in Las Vegas
Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D., founder and director of two non-profit Woodbury CT organizations Are You Dense, Inc. and Are You Dense Advocacy, Inc., has been selected by breast health leaders to keynote the National Consortium of Breast Centers meeting in April. Dr. Cappello will illustrate why she took the unpaved and bumpy road of patient advocacy upon her diagnosis of advanced stage breast cancer in her spirited talk, "Why I Talk to Strangers About My Breasts." She will be joined by other global health care leaders to discuss the latest screening and treatment options. Dr. Cappello's advocacy for reducing missed, delayed and advanced stage cancer had led to 25 dense breast tissue reporting laws around the country, following Connecticut's landmark density disclosure law in 2009.

Profnet Offering Two $500 Scholarships for Graduating Seniors
ProfNet, the Professional Networking Group of Waterbury, is offering two $500 scholarships to graduating high school students. The scholarships are open to any graduating senior who will be continuing in an accredited course of higher education, and are not constrained by applicants' town of residence. Applications must be accompanied by a minimum 500 word essay on "What Higher Education Will do for my Future" and postmarked by May 31, 2016. The 43 members of the ProfNet meet weekly at 7:00 AM. Quilts that Care to Meet in April
Quilts that Care, an organization that makes quilts for people who undergo cancer treatment, will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Monday, April 18 at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, 1075 Chase Parkway, Waterbury. An all-day quilt-making event, with free lunch provided, will be from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Saturday, April 9 at The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. Admission is free. The group will meet from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, April 19 at the Bristol Public Library, 5 High St. The group will meet from 12:30 to 2:00 PM. Wednesday, April 20 at The Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Route 202, Litchfield. Currently, quilts are donated to eight Connecticut Hospitals, including The Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center, Saint Mary's VITAS, Bristol Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital. Donations of fabric shop gift cards, 100 percent cotton fabric, twin-size quilt backings, cotton flannel and quilting materials are being accepted. The donation of an 800-1,000 sq. ft. work location with storage would be gratefully accepted. Volunteers are being sought. Quilters are especially needed. Friends of Silas Bronson Library to host Membership Drive
The Friends of the Silas Bronson Library are launching a membership drive at the end of April. With only a handful of active members, the Friends want to revitalize their organization and increase support for the Silas Bronson Library. The membership drive will kick off with a reception at the Library on Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 PM. The evening program is open to the public, giving them an opportunity to learn more about the benefits of membership and opportunities for volunteering with the Friends. Library Director, Raechel Guest, will speak about library programs and services supported by the Friends. Refreshments will be served. The Friends raise funds to support the Library through membership fees, book sales, donations, and grants. The Friends also assist the Library through advocacy and outreach, including publication of the monthly Books & Happenings newsletter and visiting senior centers and neighborhood associations to increase public awareness of the Library and its services. Membership rates start at $15 per year for students and seniors.
