A Message from our President, Lynn Ward

The start of autumn this month often marks a return to busier schedules in the business community and the Chamber has a number of events in the coming weeks. Our next Out for Business networking reception will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at Fascia's Chocolates, 44 Chase River Road, Waterbury, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will be preceded by a Buzz Session "Why You Need Background Screening," from 5 p.m. to 5:30 presented by Lori Turmel, of Employer's Reference Source.

The 19th Annual Malcolm Baldrige Awards Dinner at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville will take place on Wednesday, October 2. At this event, Attorney Gary B. O'Connor, of Pullman & Comely, LLC, will receive the Malcolm Baldrige Community Award,  Jack E. Traver, Jr., of Traver IDC, will receive the Chamber's 2013 Leadership Award, and Virginia O'Rourke Cookson, of O'Rourke & Birch Florist, will receive the Chamber's 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award. The not-to-miss evening also includes a silent auction to raise funds for the Chamber's economic development efforts.This year's Business Women's Forum (BWF), Connecticut's largest and longest-running full-day annual conference for women, on October 18will feature Kathy Ireland CEO and chief designer of the design empire Kathy Ireland Worldwide, the 23rd most powerfully licensed brand in the world as one of two keynote speakers. The conference will also feature six professional development workshops, all-day networking, breakfast, lunch, and a closing reception. If you've considered professional development training for yourself of any your female staff, 2013 BWF represents an ideal opportunity.

Welcome New Members

 On Wednesday, August 21, the City of Waterbury held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Waterbury Career Academy, which will mirror the curricula of the state's regional Vo-Tech schools, while serving Waterbury students. Members of the Chamber's Manufacturers Council have helped the city design the new school's manufacturing programming. 

On Thursday, August 22, Mathnasium held a grand opening ceremony for its Naugatuck Valley location at West Main St., Waterbury. Fascia's Chocolates Welcomed Governor Malloy  

Fascia's Chocolates, celebrating 50 years of success, welcomed Governor Dannel P. Malloy August 28 to their soon-to-open chocolate-making factory and retail store at 44 Chase River Road. The new 12,500 square foot factory's Grand Opening Celebration will be held October 12, 13 and 14, will include factory tours, free samples of Fascia's Chocolates, their new gelatos and sorbets, and raffle prizes. Music and entertainment will be offered Saturday and Sunday. Energy Systems Sales & Training LLC (ESST) & IMTI Receive VA Approval for Solar PV & Other "Green" Trade Apprenticeship Training Programs

ESST-Energy Systems Sales & Training LLC and IMTI-Industrial Management & Training Institute at 233 Mill Street in Waterbury announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has approved their "green jobs" apprenticeship training programs for solar PV energy professionals, electrical technicians, electronics systems technicians, HVAC and plumbing technicians. Branagan Communications Consultants LLC Launches PR Campaigns for Waterbury "Legends":Fascia's Chocolates, O'Rourke & Birch Florist, The Grotto Restaurant

This spring, Branagan Communications Consultants (BCC) launched a regional eastern United States publicity campaign to announce Fascia's Chocolates' 50th anniversary and the purchase of their own building at 44 Chase River Road. In August, a campaign was launched to publicize the 90th anniversary of O'Rourke & Birch Florist Inc., 170 Freight Street, named an FTD Master Florist and creator of Vera Wang Wedding floral arrangements making them one of only eight designated florists in Connecticut. Virginia "Ginny" O'Rourke Cookson, owner of O'Rourke & Birch for 44 years, has been named the Waterbury Regional Chamber's 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Naugatuck YMCA Welcomes New Executive Director and  Hosts Future Events

Come and meet Susan Talbot, the new CEO of the Naugatuck YMCA at an Open House on Tuesday, September 17 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm and while you're there, check out the programs being offered this fall.  Light refreshments will be offered throughout the day. The Pre-Auction Gift dinner will be held on Wednesday, September 11 at Santos' Restaurant from 6:00-8:00 pm. A Fine Wine and Liquors will host a wine tasting prior to dinner. Connecticut Community Foundation Gives Local Challenge

The Connecticut Community Foundation (CCF) is celebrating its 90th Anniversary by sponsoring GiveLocal 2013-- a 36-hour online giving challenge in mid-November to inspire people in our community to give generously to local nonprofit organizations that make our region a stronger, more vibrant community for all. Every gift will generate matching funds; participating organizations may also win cash prizes. CCF is seeking business partners that will contribute matching funds/prizes as an incentive for individual giving. Sponsors will be acknowledged as donors throughout the GiveLocal 2013 challenge. Traver IDC 75th Anniversary Celebration
