Auden's Col

Auden's Col (5480 m) offers a challenge to anyone looking for one. A mixed bag of a steep ascent to a high pass, a descent to a large glacier traverse and a walk down one of the prettier valley of the Himalaya, makes this a primo option if you are looking for a demanding trek that will test you.

Spectaular drives, hikes, camping, and witnessing the grand spectacle of the Grand Canyon of the Zanskar
The Grand Canyon of Asia - August 03-17 & Aug 17-28, 2015

Until recent years, the canyon of the Zanskar was only known to the local Zanskaris who viewed it with some awe, but not we suspect with any great love - they regarded it like you view a prize bull -

a magnificent but dangerous necessity. In the long winter months, the passes over the mountains are blocked by snow and the District of Zanskar is cut off from the rest of Ladakh . Then the only link to the outside world is down the Grand Canyon of the Zanskar, walking on the frozen ice as the river still runs below - a cold, arduous, and perilous, trek, called the Chadar trek. In a land full of spectacular sights, and magnificent monasteries, it is easy to overlook a hidden wonder - the gorge cut by the mighty Zanskar river as it carves its way through the Zanskar mountains. This is a deep canyon, with 2000 ft high cliffs falling sheer into the raging river, pathless, remote, and forbidding.  In more recent years the Zanskar has become known to international river runners, and top trekkers who have hailed it as 'the Grand Canyon of Asia'.

Those who have been lucky enough to travel down the great canyons and rivers of the world, all rate the Zanskar as truly magnificent and a world classic. Most people agree that in terms of the scenery it is more magnificent than say

the Grand Canyon of the Colorado,  Canada's Nahanni River, or Peru's Colca Canyon. The former are both National Parks and World Heritage Sites.

Coupled with the magnificent scenery is the traditional mainly Buddhist culture of Zanskar - a fascinating example to the rest of the world of sustainable environmental living.

Gorge above Nyerak

Our "special" yearly feature drives through most of western Ladakh, monasteries, palaces, villages, hikes and travel to one of the most surreal places on the planet. The trip begins with a flight over the Himalayas into the Trans-Himalayan region of Ladakh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. We spend a couple of days in Leh town acclimatizing at 11,000 feet above sea level and visiting the ancient monasteries, palaces and villages around Leh. We then drive west of Leh past the town of Kargil and travel south into the valley of Zanskar, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth. Starting the trip on the Stod river, we begin our self contained multi-day river adventure down the spectacular and scenic Zanskar river gorge.

Scouting the crux of the Zanskar canyon, the Constriction

The trip takes you down the extremely desolate, remote and sheer Zanskar gorge with walls rising a few thousand feet out of the river bed, culminating on the mighty Indus river, (which incidentally lends India its name).

Undoubtedly a classic, this journey to the last truly lost horizon of our shrinking planet - Zanskar, the "land of white copper" is a trip of a lifetime.
