March 29: 7:00pm "DJ Rose and Son Architectural Drawings and Project Files: The Gift of History" in the Warner Room.
In 2014 D. J. Rose and Son, Inc., North Carolina's
oldest General Contractor, donated their
extensive collection of architectural blue prints
and field notes to North Carolina State University
Libraries, Special Collections Research Center.
In the process of cataloging and preserving this
collection, Gwynn Thayer, Associate Head and
Curator of Special Collections and Catherine
W. Bishir, Curator of Architectural Records and
author of North Carolina Architecture and coauthor
of A Guide to the Historic Architecture
of Eastern North Carolina, have put together
a presentation to give us a glimpse into this
treasure. From schools, water and power plants,
railroad depots and repair shops, municipal
buildings, banks, from Maryland to Florida
and west to the Mississippi and everything in
between, Mr. D. J. built it. It was said that you
could stand on any building in Rocky Mount,
throw a stone in any direction and hit another
building he built.
