FOOD TRUCKS MAKE IT

TO DOWNTOWN

First week of business at South & Broad

Rochester City Council recently approved a 6-month pilot program (effective June 1) that allows food trucks to serve the downtown lunch crowd. Get out of the office and enjoy some new cuisine at the following 3 locations:

  • Andrews Street bridge
  • Corner of South Ave. & Broad St.
  • Corner of State St. & Platt St.

RDDC was engaged in the process with the City of Rochester to develop a program that would make way for the national food truck movement, and also balance the needs of food truck vendors with existing bricks & mortar restaurants.

HOUSING BOOM CONTINUES

The much anticipated opening of the Academy Building has finally arrived! A total of 21 loft-style apartments, as well as commercial space, are now available for lease. Click here for leasing contact information. The restoration of this historic landmark has been a labor of love for developer George Traikos, who has over the past 7 years invested over $5 million to restore the historic 1873 building. Read more about the project in this news article: "Lofts in Historic Academy Building Now Available" (6/1/13 Democrat & Chronicle)

Windsor Gate Windsor Gate, on the corner of University Ave. & Windsor St., is a newly constructed complex of  "for sale" townhomes that recently opened in the Grove Place neighborhood. Developer Bob DiPaolo reports that all five units quickly sold, including one to a couple from Avon who is looking for a walkable lifestyle in their retirement years. View photos taken on a recent property tour and find more information on the property webpage.

NEW PENTHOUSE VIEW AT ONE EAST AVE

Gallina Development Corporation, which purchased One East Avenue in 2012, has opened a new special event venue, "The Penthouse", on the building's top 11th floor. Developer Andy Gallina is not planning to lease the building's vacant office space until parking is in place as part of the Midtown site development, but he hopes The Penthouse will help to showcase the building in the meantime. Read more in this Rochester Business Journal article and click here to view more photos of the space and sweeping views.

CENTRAL LIBRARY LIGHTS UP THE NIGHT

You may have noticed Rundel Library has a new nighttime look. The City of Rochester recently installed multi-colored LED lighting on three sides of the building closest to the river, which is intended to be the focal point. Read more in this Democrat & Chronicle article.

WELCOMING WINDSTREAM!

In a few weeks, 330 Windstream employees will move from their corporate offices in Perinton to their new headquarters on the Midtown site. Also moving in will be two Windstream subsidiaries -- Allworx (read more here) and Pinnacle Software -- who are moving from suburban locations (East Rochester and Fairport, respectively).

RDDC and DSSI are partnering up to give them a "Welcome to Downtown" package that includes special deals from area restaurants and retail businesses, walking maps, and information about the exciting development surrounding them in their new corporate neighborhood!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE
HIGH FALLS DISTRICT

The High Falls area has been undergoing a slow transformation away from the entertainment district it was once considered. The recent closing of the High Falls Visitor Center (due to City budget cuts) perhaps underscores its new identity as a office and residential district that is less focused on foot traffic. Move-ins like Brand Networks, which recently established its headquarters in the District, will contribute to the strong business community, and the number of residential units has climbed to over 100 with the addition of the Mills at High Falls in 2009. More changes may be coming with the possible move of MCC to the Kodak complex across the way. Read more about recent changes in these articles:

The District has also become the hub of the popular and growing Greentopia Festival. The Festival is a project of Friends of the GardenAerial, a group with an overarching vision of making High Falls a "World Class Site" and eco-tourism mecca. The team, led by Michael Philipson and Lewis Stess of The Philipson Group, occupies the space on the corner of Mills Race (click here to view photos of their offices). They recently erected a green chair (pictured above) in the center of the District and have plans to transform the Brown's Race into a sunken garden. And in a major step toward their vision, they  recently purchased the land that High Falls sits upon. Read more about GardenAerial here:

The short story? A bright future is in store for an area rich with history and natural beauty.

  • Locate restaurants, venues, shops & amenities
  • Stay tuned to events, festivals, news & projects

CREATING A BICYCLE FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

Downtown is the epicenter of a local movement to create a bicycle and pedestrian friendly community. Evidence of the movement is seen in the recent Genesee-Finger Lakes Active Transportation Summit attended by 250 people, the full week of events all around the City during Roc the Bike Week in May, and the City of Rochester's Bicycle Master Plan Project.

Coming up is another major effort organized by the grassroots group Reconnect Rochester. The second annual ROC Transit Day is Thursday, June 20. The event encourages Rochesterians to use public transit and take at least one bus ride during the day. Volunteers will be giving away free prizes on random bus routes, street musicians will serenade downtown transit stops, and it is rumored that even Rex the Rhino will be riding the bus that day. Businesses will be offering exclusive deals to bus riders (use this interactive map to find deals). Join in the fun!
