MonteVerde Rowe Welcomes New Homeowner

Progress continues at MonteVerde Rowe where AHC Greater Baltimore is transforming the 2600 block of Violet Avenue. This month, AHC-GB sold their third, fully renovated house to another first-time home-buyer.

The new homeowner grew up in the Park Heights neighborhood and knows the community well. She also knows all too well the struggles facing many in the community and is excited to be a part of positive change that is taking place. She is a true success story!

In addition to the three purchased homes, AHC-GB recently completed full, historic renovations on four other homes on the block that are also ready for sale. Two additional homes will be renovated this summer as the project continues to serve as a positive force for change in the community.

To learn more about MonteVerde Rowe, take a virtual tour of the beautifully renovated homes, or find out about down-payment assistance and other programs available to assist home-buyers, visit the  MonteVerde Rowe website.

AHC Hosts Tour for Large Multifamily Developers

AHC hosted a mobile workshop for large nonprofit developers during a recent NeighborWorks conference. The tour was designed to give organizations an opportunity to share their knowledge and expertise in producing affordable housing in the current economic environment.

Participants toured a variety of AHC's properties in Arlington and discussed the unique challenges facing large developers of affordable housing. Participants represented large organizations that managed over 1,000 units and/or produce 100 units of multi-family housing per year.

Teens and Parents Tour Old Dominion University

Resident Services Assistant Director Emily Ward and student Eskinder Mesafint were among the AHC group who visited ODU. E

Exposing our students to the opportunities and excitement of going to college is a major emphasis of AHC's Teen Tutoring program.

Recently 23 students and their parents toured Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk. The trip was a big success and several students are very interested in the school.

Eskinder Mesafint, a senior at Washington-Lee high school was particularly excited because he has received a generous scholarship to the school.

Eskinder has been a part of AHC's Teen Program since 7th grade. He hopes to study communications with a concentration in media studies.

The ODU trip was the Teen Program's third college tour this school year. Students have previously visited George Mason University and the University of Maryland at College Park.

How Affordable Housing Makes Cents for Arlington

This Alliance for Housing Solutions (AHS) conference included lots of helpful information, including Housing Needs in the Core of Virginia's Northern Tier, a presentation by Barry Merchant, Senior Policy Analyst, VHDA, which underscores that the need for net new affordable units to house young workers, especially young families, will be critical to the region's - and Virginia's - continued economic growth. More information from the conference will be posted soon on the AHS website.
