Concealed Carry
Yep, it's the law now. You can, if you have a permit, cart a gun into a college classroom. Oh, and into state-run psychiatric hospitals, because what could possibly go wrong there?
Whatever you may think of the law, we who believe in the Prince of Peace have a different weapon at our disposal, one which is no weapon at all except in its ability to disarm hatred and overwhelm fear. It is love, God's given in Christ, ours to carry, but not concealed. It is best openly carried, shared, and lived. It is love that is finally our joy and our defense; after all, it is love alone that overcame death, and it is love alone that can overcome all that brings us sorrow or fear. May that love be closer than a holster on your hip; may it be in your heart.

DO YOU NEED TO GO TO THE JOHN?
The Jumble of Hygenic Necessities (JOHN) is now open. The JOHN is our emergency pantry for items not often available at the food bank or other places where students in need could go; toiletries and related items are stored in the Christ Chapel office and are available Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00, or by appointment.
|
ALSO COMING UP:
Cooking for the Homeless of San Marcos: We cook and serve a meal to the homeless on the first Monday of every month; meet at Southside Community Center, 518 S. Guadalupe, at 4:45 to help. Go to the very back of the property to find the homeless shelter. Our upcoming dates are February 1st and March 7.
Tour of Canyon Lake Gorge, February 20th:
The Glen Rose limestone throughout Central Texas was laid down during the Cretaceous Era over millions of years. But within a few weeks following the Flood Event of 2002 the Power of Water carved a gorge into the landscape below the Canyon Lake Spillway.
A true treasure was "unearthed":
- Dramatic Vistas
- Hidden Valley Fault (within the Balcones Fault Zone)
- Geologic Formations
- Beautiful Lagoons and Waterfalls
- Trinity Aquifer in Action
- Biologic Succession
- Numerous Seeps and Springs
- 110 million year old Dinosaur Tracks
- Extensive Marine Fossil Diversity
- Hydraulic Dynamics of Glen Rose Limestone
The tours, which cost $10, are capped at 23 participants and often sell out well in advance. So, we have to set the deadline for February 14th for payment. Visit canyongorge.org/ for more information.

Ash Wednesday? What's That? Why Ashes?
Jesus retreated into the wilderness and fasted for forty days to prepare for his ministry. It was for him a time of contemplation, reflection, and preparation. By observing Lent, most Christians join Jesus on his retreat. Lent consists of the forty days before Good Friday, the day of Jesus' crucifixion. The ancient biblical symbol of ashes, a sign of remorse, repentance, and mourning, are especially appropriate as we reflect on Jesus' work of facing death in order that we might have life. The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes also reminds us that:
- Death comes to everyone; we truly are "dust, and to dust we shall return"
- We're not perfect, and sorrow for the ways we've hurt each other is appropriate.
- We can and must change ourselves for the better.
- God made the first human being by breathing life into dust; without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes
- It's also a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism; the cross reminds us that despite our mortality, we still belong to God.

Reviews
Submit your own for any new thing. Opinions below are strictly those of the chaplain, but they are absolutely right.
"Joy"
Jennifer Lawrence and the rest of the cast are fine, but when all is said and done, it's the neither comic nor tragic semi-true story of a woman who invents a mop. My beloved liked it, but with nary an explosion or car chase, I was left unmoved.
