Potluck and Other News
It's the first Sunday of Advent and our annual post-Thanksgiving Potluck Dinner this Sunday night, November 29th. Worship is at 5:30 with the potluck dinner to follow right after. Bring whatever you'd like to share, even leftovers from last Thursday.
WEDNESDAY "BREAD AND BELONGING" 5:30 P.M.
Fresh-baked bread, then a different experience every week.  Our last gathering for the semester will be a service of healing and song. Come for the calm before the storm that is finals week.
God Goes to the Movies
Tuesday, December 1st, 7:30 p.m.  We'll gather in the Christ Chapel Lounge to watch and discuss what theological themes emerge from "Inside Out," a recent Pixar release that has great reviews.  From IMDB: "After young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school."  Popcorn will be served.
SUNDAY WORSHIP: 5:30 P.M.
Join us as we use the beautiful "Unfailing Light" liturgy throughout the end of the year. Some highlights:
NOVEMBER 29 - POTLUCK DINNER
Bring a dish to share, perhaps left over from Thanksgiving dinner at home.
DECEMBER 6 - 2ND SUNDAY OF ADVENT
It's also the start of Hanukkah, so we'll spend some time talking about the Jewish festival of lights.
DECEMBER 13 - FAREWELL AND GODSPEED
On this 3rd Sunday of Advent, we will bid farewell and Godspeed to three graduating Christ Chapel members: Westley Halbardier, Mary Underwood, and Samuel Verastegui, Jr.
DECEMBER 20, 27, JANUARY 3 - NO SERVICES
See the bottom of this newsletter for links to local congregations where you might go for Christmas Eve and other Sunday services until we begin again on January 10th.
DO YOU NEED TO GO TO THE JOHN?
The Jumble of Hygenic Necessities (JOHN) is now open.  The JOHN is our emergency pantry for items not often available at the food bank or other places where students in need could go; toiletries and related items are stored in the Christ Chapel office and are available Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 to 3:00, or by appointment.
ALSO COMING UP:

Our Last Bobcat Lunch of the Semester is November 30th!  Meals will resume on January 25th.

Cooking for the Homeless of San Marcos: We cook and serve a meal to the homeless on the first Monday of every month; meet at Southside Community Center, 518 S. Guadalupe, at 4:45 to help.  Go to the very back of the property to find the homeless shelter. Our upcoming dates are DECEMBER 7th and JANUARY 4th.

End of Year Christmas Party - December 3rd, 7:30
Bring a white-elephant gift to exchange.  We'll have tamales and chili, with game night to follow.
Reviews
Submit your own for any new thing.  Opinions below are strictly those of the chaplain, but they are absolutely right.

"The Hunger Games - Mockingjay, Part II"
More or less satisfactorily bringing an end to the series, Mockingjay Part II includes things blowing up exceedingly well, always a positive in this reviewer's opinion.  At times, the action made me feel as if I were caught in a video game, while other segments dragged. The normally animated Ms. Lawrence seemed somehow disengaged; her facial expression remains impassive and unreadable throughout the movie, even when announcing she intends to assassinate her nemesis, President Snow. Phillip Seymour Hoffman's brief appearances are a painful reminder of what a fine actor we lost.
Theologically, the movies are about what kind of world we want and what values we hold dearest. All of those issues are explored in a completely non-theistic context; God is never mentioned, nor are we bothered with a storyline involving an alternative metaphysics (a mistake many sci-fi and futuristic movies make). Another odd thing; no one in the world envisioned by Suzanne Collins ever cusses. I find this rather refreshing, as swear words are too often the crutch of the uncreative.
Overall, the movie is worth seeing and necessary if you are a fan of the other three movies. There should have only been three, however; the story in Mockingjay
I and II could have been condensed into one and made for a much more solid series.
