Our Purpose:  In gratitude for God's mercy in Christ, we shall be a community of worship, service, and hospitality.
Joy and Need
Vocation: It comes from the Latin vocare, to call, and means the work a person is called to by God. There are all different kinds of voices calling you to all different kinds of work, and the problem is to find out which is the voice of God rather than of Society, say, or the Superego, or Self-Interest. By and large a good rule for finding out is this. The kind of work God usually calls you to is the kind of work (a) that you need most to do and (b) that the world most needs to have done. If you really get a kick out of your work, you've presumably met requirement (a), but if your work is writing TV deodorant commercials, the chances are you've missed requirement (b). On the other hand, if your work is being a doctor in a leper colony, you have probably met requirement (b), but if most of the time you're bored and depressed by it, the chances are you have not only bypassed (a) but probably aren't helping your patients much either. Neither the hair shirt not the soft berth will do. The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet.

WEDNESDAY "BREAD AND BELONGING" 5:30 P.M.
Fresh-baked bread, then a different experience every week.
September 9:  Labor and Love - What's your vocation? We'll use scripture and the quote above to explore your true calling.
September 16: Taize Evening Prayer - Meditative songs from the community of Taize, with prayer and scripture.
September 23: Celtic Evening Prayer - Songs and prayers gathered from our Christian friends in Ireland.
September 30: Evening Prayer with a Professor: Dr. Ty Schepis, Dept. of Psychology, will join us to speak on how his profession and confession intersect.
October 7: Holden Evening Prayer - A sung liturgy that is a favorite.  We'll learn (or re-learn) it and talk about its various parts, their purpose and significance.
SUNDAY WORSHIP: 5:30 P.M.
We will start having suppers after worship at least twice a month, beginning October 4th.  Meanwhile, join us for worship, and then a meal afterwards at a local restaurant.  First-timers: your meal is on us.

PRIDE SERVICE - SEPTEMBER 13
San Marcos is holding its annual Pride Parade on Saturday.  Consider yourself invited to walk with us.  We will line up at Dunbar Park, 801 MLK Drive, by 9:30, or just cheer us along the route. At our Sunday evening worship service on the 13th, we will celebrate the grace of God that extends to all of God's children, including those of the LGBT community.

FESTIVAL OF ST. FRANCIS - OCTOBER 4th
Christ Chapel honors St. Francis for his love of nature, his call to simplicity, and his hospitality.  Join us that day for worship and the blessing of any animal that hasn't been blessed in years past.
RETREAT!
September 18-20, at Well Spring Retreat Center, near Fischer, Texas.  What's involved?  Signing up.  The retreat itself is all about relaxing in one of the most beautiful Hill Country settings you can imagine.  Hiking, games, food, snacks, more food, time alone and time together.  The cost is $15, which covers meals and lodging.  Sign up and pay by September 15th.  Send an e-mail to Christ Chapel for more information.
ALSO COMING UP SOON:

Bobcat Lunch: Every Monday at 12:00, a free lunch is served to students, faculty and staff.  You're invited afterward to take a tour of our prayer stations in the sanctuary for a few minutes of quiet and contemplation.

Open Mic and Game Night, September 22: Show off your talent, whatever it may be.  Afterwards, we'll break out a variety of board games.

Snake Farm, October 10: We'll carpool mid-morning to this excellent roadside attraction and be back in the mid-afternoon.  Cost: $15 (admission + a little bit for gas).
DO YOU NEED TO GO TO THE JOHN? YOU CAN'T YET, BUT PRETTY SOON...
The Jumble of Hygenic Necessities (JOHN) is the pantry for items not often available at the food bank or other places where students in need could go. With the help of congregations in our area, we will be gathering all the items one might need behind a bathroom door, including deodorant, toothpaste, razors, etc. Keep an eye out for the opening of the JOHN in October; donations from students or others reading this newsletter are certainly welcome.

Lay's Weird Flavor Chips
This year's selection is much better than last year's craziness.  The cappuccino potato chip should have never seen the light of day.  The Mango Salsa sounded good, but were unbelievably bad.  Think Juicy-Fruit gum-flavored chips.  The Bacon Mac-n-Cheese was forgettable.  Thankfully, they came through with the Wasabi and Ginger chips.  This year's selection shows promise, but with only two down, the verdict remains out. I tried the West Coast Truffle Fries, which tasted like a sour cream and parsley chip.  I wasn't expecting real truffle flavor (the mushroom kind, not the chocolate), as truffles start at $80 an ounce.  I don't think I'd buy any more, but I wouldn't turn them down if they were offered at a party.  The Greek Town Gyros flavor actually did have a gyros after-taste, but it was the liver-y, musty, you-don't-want-to-know-how-gyro-meat-is-made kind of taste.  I'll review the New York Reuben and the Biscuits and Gravy flavors next time.
