GODISNOWHERE
So, is God now here, or nowhere?  It's an old word trick, but worth considering.  If God is nowhere, then there is not much point in reading on.  But if God is now here, where might that be? Wherever you are, of course: in your home, in the library, at work, while you sleep, at the bar, at the grocery store, in trouble, in pain, homeless, joyful, in love, in heartbreak.  If God is now here, then there is, as the Psalms say, nowhere to flee from God's presence.  And that includes those broken places we find ourselves in, not just the happy places.  When Jesus cried from the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?," it seemed God was nowhere.  But it was precisely there God that was, in the flesh, on the cross, completely one with our own suffering.
I don't know exactly what that might mean for you, except to say that as the semester rolls on and the pressures grow, it may seem God is growing distant. But how we feel isn't the measure to take.  The measure is in the promise of God in Christ to be with us always, the assurance that even in the valley of the shadow, we are not alone.  You may not always feel God is now here, but the promise remains.  Indeed, you can count on this; when things seem to be the worst, God is holding you the tightest.  That's love for you, and it's now here for you. Enjoy it and celebrate it with us in worship this Sunday night at 7:00.
GOD GOES TO THE MOVIES - Thursday, 10/30, 7:00
Well, God Goes to the Scary Movies, in this case. In recognition of All Hallow's Eve (Halloween), we will poke fun at death by watching a semi-scary movie together and explore the question of how God is present in the story.  Our movie this time:  Tucker and Dale vs
tucker
Evil. Tucker & Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are attacked by a group of preppy college kids.  What more could you ask for, except sharks and tornadoes?
All Saints' Sunday - November 2
On the Sunday closest to All Saints' Day, we recall the lives of all the saints who have gone before us, including the less famous ones that you may have known as Grandmom or Granddad.  Our friends from the San Marcos Unitarian Fellowship set up an altar for honoring and remembering those saints in the manner of many Mexican-American families and will leave it up for our use on Sunday, November 2nd.  You are invited to bring pictures or other mementos to fill up our altar and stories to share about how your saint pointed you to the light.
FEEDING THE HOMELESS
Southside Community Center (518 S. Guadalupe St.) feeds the homeless of our town every night of the year.  On the first Monday of each month, we cook and bring dinner to the guests of the Center, with food prep starting at 4:00 and serving the meal from 5:00-6:30.  Volunteers are always welcome to cook, greet the guests, serve, and wash the dishes.  Our next turn is
November 3rd and then again on December 1st.
E-mail christchapel@txstate.edu if you would like to take part.
A NEW KITCHEN!
Feeding the homeless and the over 100 students who join us for lunch each Monday has been awkward, in that our kitchen has been out of commission for the semester. Unexpected asbestos abatement, followed by VERY expensive code updates from the city of San Marcos, made every getting a kitchen again a dicey prospect.  To the rescue - friends of the ministry with a generous heart and the means to help have taken over renovating the kitchen from the ground up.  We will someday soon have a beautiful new space that will be safe and adequate for all the meals served in this place.  At the right time and with their permission, we'll name the donor, but for now, we'll simply say THANK YOU and thanks be to God for moving in their lives to help us.  We are truly grateful, and hope many who are fed through the kitchen will themselves be inspired to be generous givers someday when they have the ability.
Wednesday Evening Worship and Bible Study and on November 5th, SUPPER at Grin's.  On us!
Join us for a contemplative time of song, prayer, and reflection, using services from sources such as the Book of Common Prayer and the Taize Community every Wednesday at 5:30.  On November 5th, dinner is on us as we invite you to help us strategize for the months and year ahead.
OPEN MIC NIGHT - 11/5
Bring your songs, jokes, stories, talents, and whatever else you could share to our open mic night on Wednesday, November 5th at 6:30.  If you've been too scared to try out something at a club or bar, we're a safe place where you can flame out or shine and be supported either way. Bring a friend!

JESUS ON TAP - 11/18
We'll gather at 7:00 that Tuesday night at Tantra Coffee House for a conversation about technology and its impact on faith and Christian community.
Reviews
Submit your own for any new thing.  Opinions below are strictly those of the chaplain, but they are absolutely right.

Thai Thai Cafe's New Menu
After years of their menu including puzzling directions such as, "Use any sauce from soy only," Thai Thai has new menus that are much clearer.  And cleaner.  The restaurant as a whole has picked up its level of clean, and while it still will not be mistaken for a surgical suite, it's getting better.  The food is still the same kind of delicious.  Yes, the restaurant has its detractors, but it's not stayed in business all these years without a lot of loyal customers. I'm one of them.

Forgotify
So Spotify brags about having 20,000,000 songs in its catalog, but almost a quarter of them have never been given a listen, not even once.  Forgotify.com aims to correct that by playing songs that no one has given any love.  I tried it and got a song by the King of the Slums from their album "Blowzy Weirdos."  It was difficult to appreciate, but if you're the kind that likes new and different music that you can be sure you've never heard before, try Forgotify.  Or just tune in to Texas State's KTSW at 98.9, where pretty much the same thing is happening.
AND DON'T FORGET...

Higher Grounds Coffee House is open every morning at 8:30.  Try a cup of organic, fair-trade coffee. Bring a travel mug, if you can.
