A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free suppers at 6:15
510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage)

Our Purpose:  In gratitude for God's mercy in Christ, we shall be a community of worship, service, and hospitality.

Why Ashes?  Why Lent?
Jesus retreated into the wilderness and fasted for forty days to prepare for his ministry. It was for him a time of contemplation, reflection, and preparation. By observing Lent, most Christians join Jesus on his retreat. Lent consists of the forty days before Good Friday, the day of Jesus' crucifixion.  The ancient biblical symbol of ashes, a sign of remorse, repentance, and mourning, are especially appropriate as we reflect on Jesus' work of facing death in order that we might have life.

The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes also reminds us that:

  • Death comes to everyone; we truly are "dust, and to dust we shall return."
  • We're not perfect, and sorrow for the ways we've hurt each other is appropriate.
  • We can and must change ourselves for the better.
  • God made the first human being by breathing life into dust; without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes.
  • It's also a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism; the cross reminds us that despite our mortality, we still belong to God.
We will observe Ash Wednesday with our friends at UCM-Wesley on March 5th with a service including Communion at 5:30 p.m.  Pr. Jaime will be dispensing ashes on the Quad that morning as well, so come by between classes.  But before that night...

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER March 4, 6:15. This is an annual event where in preparation for Lent, we use up all the fat in the kitchen by making pancakes and eating lots of sausage.  Join us at 5:00 to help cook.
GOD GOES TO THE MOVIES - Feb. 25, 8:00
in the Christ Chapel Lounge (downstairs).

Popcorn provided. Free! Be prepared to be scared and awed as we watch the super-intense  "Gravity,"  starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Way better than studying.

TYLER PRUESSNER TO VISIT
A beloved alum of Christ Chapel, and one of the main reasons we are a proud, openly welcoming ministry will be visiting and speaking on Sunday, March 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at our regular worship service.  Tyler is a great man with a great story, so be sure to come hear him this coming Sunday.
COOKING CLASS HAS TWO OPEN SPACES

Christ Chapel has received a grant for the purpose of teaching students how to cook nutritious and delicious meals.  This grant will cover most of the costs for 10 weeks of cooking lessons. Each week will include instruction in subjects such as knife techniques, food safety, grilling, baking, and sauteing.  With each lesson will come a Bible study on topics such as sharing food, hospitality, and thanksgiving.  The course is strictly limited to 15 students and will involve a small charge per meal. We meet on Saturdays at 10:30, cook, reflect, and then eat a fine meal together at 1:00 p.m. Call, text, or e-mail Pr. Jaime before Thursday at 6:00 p.m. if you want to take part.

SPEAKING OF FOOD, HOW ABOUT A FREE LUNCH?

They say there's no such thing, but you won't be charged a dime for our new free lunch program at Christ Chapel, held every Monday from 12:00 to 1:30. Why are we doing it?  To extend hospitality and to let people know that Christ Chapel and UCM-Wesley together make for a safe, welcoming place.

TAIZE - MARCH 21-23, AUSTIN - MUST SIGN UP BY FEBRUARY 28!
Tens of thousands of young adults travel to France, every year to spend time in a community of contemplative prayer. The Taizé Community is an ecumenical monastic order in Taizé, Saône-et-Loire, Burgundy, France. It is composed of more than one hundred brothers, from Protestant and Catholic traditions, who originate from about thirty countries across the world.  Some of those brothers are now heading to Texas, where they will lead a weekend of contemplative prayer and song with young adults between 18 and 35 from all across North America.  The gathering begins with evening prayer on Friday, March 21st, and ends midday on Sunday.  The cost is $45, but because of a special gift from a mentor, $35  will be reimbursed, meaning a weekend experience which would normally entail hundreds of dollars in travel will cost you $10.
Look at  www.taize.fr/texas
for more information.  Six Christ Chapel participants have already signed up; if you would like to go, carpooling makes good sense.
COMING UP SOON!

Here are a few more events to remember in the weeks ahead...

COOKING FOR THE HOMELESS - March 17, 3:00-6:30.  We meet to start cooking at 3:00, then serve supper at the Southside Community Center from 5:00-6:30.  Help is needed for any part of the operation, so show up when you can and we will put you to work.

NO SUNDAY SERVICE ON MARCH 9 because we'll all be on Spring Break.  For the same reason, don't show up for a Wednesday service on MARCH 12.

BOBCAT BUILD - MARCH 22  If you are not going to the Taize Pilgrimage, join us with UCM-Wesley in service projects around San Marcos.

OPEN MIC NIGHT - MARCH 26, 7:00 p.m.  We had a great time last week with songs, jokes, stories and comedy routines.  Bring your talent to share.

SAN ANTONIO ZOO-MARCH 29  We will carpool from Christ Chapel at 9:15 and spend the morning and afternoon at the zoo.  Admission and gas money is $14.00.  You will need a bit more for food and drinks.
