THIS SUNDAY: ANDREW GREEN PREACHES,
ST. ELIZABETH'S EPISCOPAL FEEDS US
It's Pasta Paradise when the fine cooks of St. Elizabeth's bring us supper this Sunday, February 10th.  Adding to the excitement is our very own Andrew Green, now serving as a youth minister at St. Elizabeth's, will bring us the word during worship.  Come join us at 6:15 for supper and 7:00 for worship.
FEB. 12: TWO GREAT EVENTS ON ONE NIGHT!
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper:
Lent is s a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that aren't allowed in Lent. Pancakes are often eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs, which were forbidden during Lent (and still are in some traditions. So we will have pancakes and sausage together on February 12th at 7:00 p.m.  Bring a friend, and plan to stay for...
God Goes to the Movies, 8:00 p.m.
Beast "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is one of those movies that can't quite be described.  Realistic and mythical elements combine in a story of love, loss community and geography.  Nominated for Best Picture and several other awards, Roger Ebert says "Sometimes miraculous films come into being, made by people you've never heard of, starring unknown faces, blindsiding you with creative genius.  'Beasts of the Southern Wild' is one of the year's best films."  Join us to find how God might speak through this movie on February 5th.  Popcorn provided.

WHY ASHES?

Jesus retreated into the wilderness and fasted for forty days to prepare for his ministry. It was for him a time of contemplation, reflection, and preparation. By observing Lent, most Christians join Jesus on his retreat. Lent consists of the forty days before Good Friday, the day of Jesus' crucifixion.  The ancient biblical symbol of ashes, a sign of remorse, repentance, and mourning, are especially appropriate as we reflect on Jesus' work of facing death in order that we might have life.

The marking of their forehead with a cross made of ashes also reminds us that:

  • Death comes to everyone; we truly are "dust, and to dust we shall return"
  • We're not perfect, and sorrow for the ways we've hurt each other is appropriate.
  • We can and must change ourselves for the better.
  • God made the first human being by breathing life into dust; without God, human beings are nothing more than dust and ashes
  • It's also a reminder of the mark of the cross made at baptism; the cross reminds us that despite our mortality, we still belong to God.
Ashes will be "imposed" on Ash Wednesday at the service mentioned below, as well as on the Quad.
 WEDNESDAY NIGHT WORSHIP
Ash Wednesday, February 13 marks the start of Lent; we'll observe it with our friends at UCM-Wesley in a joint worship service at 5:30, followed by a soup supper.  Note the change in time for this Wednesday only!  We'll be back to meeting at 7:00 p.m. on February 20th, which marks the start of a series of four Wednesday nights with a focus on discipleship, including setting goals, overcoming obstacles, and deepening faith. As always, supper is served at 6:15.  On the 27th, our very own Michael Whitten will be preparing chili for us all, the same chili that won first place TWICE in the San Marcos Chilympiad, one of the state's larger chili cook-offs.
COOKING FOR THE HOMELESS

Christ Chapel provides a meal for the homeless of San Marcos every third Monday of the month, which falls on February 18 this month.  We'll start at 3:00 p.m. in the kitchen at Christ Chapel. At 4:45, we will transport the food to the Southside Community Center, where we will serve the meal from 5:00 to 6:30.  We will then return and finish cleaning up and putting away dishes.  We usually finish by 7:00.  Students are welcome to take part in any or all of the process.  A sign-up sheet will be available at worship on Wednesday and Sunday, or send an e-mail to christchapel@txstate.edu to indicate when you can be there or what you would like to do.
February 19th, 8:00 p.m. - Jesus on Tap
We'll meet at Tantra Coffee House to talk about the hows and whys of forgiving.  Are some things unforgiveable?  Should you always forgive, no matter how badly someone hurt you? What about rapists and murderers?  Bring your questions and your thoughts to share with us.
SERVANTS OF THE CROSS

Christ Chapel's ministry is open to all students, staff, and faculty of Texas State University.  Participants are not required to attend a certain number of times in order to be considered part of the ministry; the welcome we extend is unconditional.

However, some students may choose to explore their faith lives more intentionally through the ministry of Christ Chapel.  Toward that end, you are invited to enroll in Servants of the Cross, an order of students in ministry.

Students enrolled in Servants of the Cross make a commitment to completing three units of study over a three-semester period. This semester's subject is a

n exploration of the foundations of the Christian faith through conversation and reflection.  Classes will be held on Sundays at 3:30 on February 24th

, March 3rd, March 17th, 24th, April 7th and 14th.

Participants can expect:

To discover anew and on adult terms the content and meaning of the Christian faith...  To be refreshed in their spiritual journey and discover the richness of the Christian tradition for sustaining a life-long exploration of faith... To learn skills for ministry applicable to any life situation... To participate in a close community of friends and to develop lasting relationships... To be equipped to serve as interns in Christ Chapel's ministry program... To know more closely the joy of life in Christ.  To enroll, please notify Pr. Jaime in person or through e-mail.
