A Campus Ministry for ALL Students, Supported by the Episcopal and Lutheran Churches

Sunday and Wednesday Worship: 7:00 p.m., free suppers at 6:15
510 N. Guadalupe (across from the Tower Garage)

Our Purpose:  In gratitude for God's mercy in Christ, we shall be a community of worship, service, and hospitality.

Feeding the Homeless

Homelessness can be an abstract problem you may think about only on occasion, such as when  you pull up to an intersection at I-35 and see the pleading eyes and cardboard signs asking for money or work or both.  You are sure that some are scamming the system and that others are in the throes of addiction, and you are probably right.  But that is not the story of all, or most, or even a large share of the estimated 350 homeless people in San Marcos. We've been finding that out first-hand through Christ Chapel's work of feeding the homeless every third Monday of each month.  About 35 show up for the meals provided at Southside Community Center, and their stories are often sad but as often hopeful.  We learn from them about the real face of homelessness in San Marcos, and a surprising number of those faces look just like the students who make up our ministry.  To care for "the least" is not just a Biblical mandate, but it turns out that for we who are cooking and serving, it is a way to understand the deeper bonds that connect all of us as children of God, made in that same God's image.  If you would like to join us in this meaningful ministry, look to sign up for our next date, November 19th.

Servants of the Cross Continues with New Section on November 11th, 3:00

Servants of the Cross is designed to deepen the servant-discipleship life of its participants through a three-unit program emphasizing Scripture, catechesis, and spirituality. While all our events are open to all students, Servants of the Cross is a way for those who wish to go deeper in their faith life.  A new unit on Scripture begins 11/11/12 at 3:00 in the Board Room of Christ Chapel.  Further classes will be held on November 18, December 2 and December 9.  Participants can expect at the unit's conclusion to be able to open the Bible to any page and understand the context of the passage and how it fits into the larger story of the Bible. The course is free, but you are asked to register your intent with Pr. Jaime by November 7th.

God Goes to a SCARY Movie,

TUESDAY, October 30, 8:00 PM

We often have "God Goes to a Movie," but Halloween's chills and thrills gives us a chance to watch a scary movie, a genre that just doesn't seem to wane in popularity.  This month's selection: "Cabin in the Woods," a Joss Wheedon and Drew Goddard film that turns scary movies on their head.  We'll talk about religious themes in the film, but as importantly, what scary movies and the genre say to us about culture and what Christians can say that is a whole lot less scary, even joyful and life-affirming. Popcorn will be provided.  Bring a friend.

OPEN MIC NIGHT: November 2nd, 7-9

Higher Grounds is THE place to share your talents or utter lack thereof on November 2nd, starting at 7:00 p.m.  Bring your songs, poems, jokes, stupid human tricks, stories, or whatever.  Sign up in advance or sign up at the door.  Free, as always, with lots of coffee, tea, hot chocolate and more.

VISIT A SYNAGOGUE, LEARN FROM OUR JEWISH BROTHERS AND SISTERS

Christ Chapel continues its semester-long emphasis on getting to know other religious traditions with a visit to the Temple Beth-El in San Antonio on November 9th.  Those interested will carpool from the Christ Chapel parking lot, leaving at 5:00 p.m.  Dress appropriately, which is to say covered shoulders, something other than t-shirts, shorts, or jeans. There is no cost except that you may want to kick a couple dollars for gas toward the drivers.  And, given the hour of our trip, we may stop for supper together on the way back, place to be determined by those attending.

Women's Spirituality Group

The Rev. Lori Ruge-Jones continues leading a women's spirituality group each month; the next meeting is Monday, November 5 at 11:00 a.m. You don't have to have been at the first meeting to join.  Really, the only requirement is that you be a female-type person.  For more information, call Pastor Lori at 512-557-2188.

HUNGER BOWL
November 13th AND 14th on the Quad
It's like the Cotton Bowl, except there are no footballs involved, or a stadium.  Okay, so it's not like the Cotton Bowl at all, but it is an annual competition, and your help is needed. We need you to join us in cooking and selling sausage wraps on the Quad over two days in November from 10:30 to 2:00.  We will be competing with other campus ministries to raise money for the Hays County Food Bank, which has been especially stressed over the past few months.  Cooks and sales crews alike are needed, and the cause is great.  Look for sign-up sheets in the weeks ahead.
OTHER THINGS COMING UP:

Student Council Meeting:  Sundays, October 28th, November 11th, December 2nd, 5:30 p.m. The Student Council sets the direction for the ministry and helps develop leadership skills among the participants. New members are welcome; for more information, see Pr. Jaime.
