Make Your Own Park

In Los Angeles, only 16% of the city's acreage is dedicated to park land. A new initiative, dubbled "People St," seeks to fast-track applications from community groups to convert streets into public spaces. And the program has even developed a step-by-step kit to help groups through the process of developing parklets, plazas, and bike parking areas.

At the heart of American history, Philadelphia has preserved its historic and cultural heritage. The original colonial plan is in place with many buildings of that era still prominent in the skyline. Philadelphia and the Brandywine Valley are also important horticultural regions, with exceptional public gardens, magnificent historic trees, innovative new parks, and picturesque natural landscapes. The America in Bloom Symposium & Awards Program, October 2-4, offers a unique opportunity to gain insight into this fascinating region and meet some extraordinary people who are making a difference in their communities.
