Ohio School Offers Students the Opportunity to Get Their Hands Dirty

Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in Toledo, Ohio are digging, weeding, watering, and learning responsibility through tackling all of the chores associated with running a greenhouse. It's a laboratory of learning that also benefits the community's underprivileged residents. This past spring the students grew lettuce, peppers, pimentos, scallions, and onions and donated the harvest to a local food bank.

AIB Photo Contest: Last Chance to Cast Your Vote

Over the past few months America in Bloom has been collecting comunity-submitted photos for its "Planting Pride Photo Contest: Capturing the Spirit of America in Bloom." Sponsored by GIE Media, the contest is aimed at celebrating efforts to beautify and improve communities. Photos are categorized into seven criteria: floral displays, landscaped areas, urban forestry, environmental efforts, heritage preservation, overall impression, and community involvement.

Online voting is available through August 31. The winners will be recognized during the 2013 AIB Symposium & Awards, September 19-21 in Orlando, Florida.

Don't Forget to Vote for Your Favorite Flower

Public voting for the American Garden Award, the nation's only flower popularity contest, is open now through August 31. This is a unique opportunity for the public to select a specific flower that they think has the most appealing garden characteristics. Each of the four entries can be seen online or at any one of the 31 trial gardens across the United States.

Indeed, the stereotypical reports of what one did during their summer vacations are now delivered in the classrooms during the time when those vacations once took place. The author compounded the contrast by noting that the everyday pace of life has quickened, and the idea that there should be a "down time," as August once was, was so foreign to many that we may never again experience true relaxation.
