smiling-computer-ladies.jpg A 32-year study from Ohio State University reveals that women who work on average more than 40 hours a week put themselves at great risks for life-threatening illnesses; conversely men who put in 41 to 50 hours a week reduce their chances to develop these issues. Researchers studied almost 7,500 individuals examining cases for complications including cancer, arthritis, diabetes and heart issues. (The Telegraph, June 16, 2016)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated the first outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, a serious lung infection (pneumonia), in 1976. An increasing number of people in the U.S. are getting this disease, which is caused by breathing in small water droplets contaminated with Legionella germs. About 5,000 people are diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease and there are at least 20 outbreaks reported each year. Most identified outbreaks are in buildings with large water systems, such as hotels, long-term care facilities, and hospitals. Legionella grows best in building water systems that are not well maintained. (CDC.gov, June 7, 2016)

A 65-year-old couple retiring this year can expect to pay more than $288,000 just for Medicare parts B and D and supplemental insurance over their lifetimes, a HealthView Services study found. Their total health spending will exceed $377,000, which is $33,000 more than for a couple who retired in 2015, the study found. (Advisor News, June 7, 2016)

Muses Labs recently announced today that it has partnered with the George Washington Center for Integrative Medicine (GWCIM) to offer the MEND™ Protocol, a data driven, technology enabled, personalized methodology to correctly identify and simultaneously treat the dozens of pathology drivers of age-related cognitive decline, to patients located in Washington, DC. This agreement allows individuals with pre- and early-symptomatic cognitive decline, as well as mild Alzheimer's disease patients, to benefit from the MEND Protocol via the Center's Mental Health program operated in collaboration with the George Washington University Memory Clinic. American Holistic Nurses' Association Forming Delegation to Visit Cuba
At the Invitation of MSc. Idalmis Infante-Ochoa, President of the Cuban Society of Nursing, the American Holistic Nurses Association is organizing a delegation to visit Cuba for the purpose of meeting with our Cuban colleagues and learning about the role of Cuban nurses in health care delivery.

Lourdes Lorenz, RN, MSN-IH, AHN-BC, NEA-BC, HTPA, AHNA President-Elect will be the delegation leader. Lourdes is fluent in Spanish and a leader in the field of holistic nursing.

The goals of the delegation and the initial topics of discussion for the meetings and site visits have been preliminarily identified as the following:
  • Holistic Nursing: An Intentional Model for Caring
  • New roles developing for Holistic Nurses in the United States
  • Contemplative Practices for Self-Care
  • Integrating Holistic Therapies in Nursing Practice

Since its founding in 1976, The Cuban Society of Nursing has become the governing and regulatory body for nursing in Cuba.  Their primary focus has been on the advancement of the practice of nursing in Cuba.  Learning from them is an opportunity to delve into holistic nursing practices in Cuba, through observation of their working environment; experiencing how they address common challenges with limited resources, and gaining a new perspective on healing.

The estimated cost per delegation member is $4895 USD. Cost includes round-trip international air arrangements between Miami and Havana; group transportation, Cuban Visa and license to travel to Cuba for US Citizens; meeting planning, accommodations in double-occupancy rooms, most meals and most other costs associated with participation. Accompanying guests must pay the same price.

Due to the extensive planning and communication involved in coordinating a program of this nature, please respond with your intentions regarding attendance as soon as possible. For questions please call Professionals Abroad at (877) 298-9677 or click here to be directed to their website. You can also visit professionalabroad.org and search for American Holistic Nurses Association delegation. A $500 deposit is required to reserve your place on the team.

VA Proposed Rule Grants Full Practice Authority to APRNs
On May 25, the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Veterans Health Administration (VHA) released a proposed rule to grant full practice authority to the more than 6,500 APRNs serving in the VHA. The VA is soliciting comments on the proposed rules through July 25, 2016.

The VHA will consider all submitted comments to this proposed rule, which will ultimately impact its decision. Many stakeholders have already expressed strong opposition to allowing APRNs full practice authority so it is critical the VHA hears from RN's about support it.
United States Department of Health and Human Services Announces New Initiatives to Insure
Young Adults
The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in response to the large number of young adults remaining uninsured, has announced plans for the 2017 open enrollment to encourage participation.  Highlights from this plan include: outreach to uninsured people who paid the individual responsibility penalty, Smarter outreach during Open Enrollment, especially to young adults, facilitating young adults' coverage transitions and public-private partnerships to engage young adults along with other incentives. It is the hope of HHS that these actions will spur young adults into thinking about their health sooner, rather than later.  Read More

AHNCC -  Survey Request for Advanced Practice Nurses
AHNCC
The American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation (AHNCC), supported by the American Holistic Nurses Association (AHNA), has worked for more than 10 years to ensure that Advanced Holistic Nurses are nationally and internationally recognized for their holistic approaches to practice; their educationally based knowledge and skills; and their related competencies. Throughout time we have called on you to help us create valid and rigorous examinations. Now, we need you again.

Since the enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (2008), healthcare has shifted paradigms, emphasizing care that facilitates holistic health and wellness. Concurrently, in an effort to structure advanced practice nursing, the Consensus Model (CM) has been developed and promoted. A key characteristic of the CM is to specify those who qualify for Advanced Practice Register Nurse (APRN) status.

An unanticipated consequence is that many of those without APRN status are excluded from third-party reimbursement, are considered less qualified for direct patient/client care, and are being replaced in educational and healthcare agencies for nurses with APRN status.

AHNCC, endorsed by AHNA, has responded to the CM in various ways, including a request that a 5th role be added to the Consensus Model. The National Council for State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) responded stating that it is imperative that AHNCC clarify the unique practice activities of Holistic Nurses and write the Educational Essentials for Holistic Nursing.

AHNCC, endorsed by AHNA, have responded with a White Paper: Advanced Holistic Nursing declaring our intent to continue to pursue the 5th role for Advanced Holistic Nurses and to prepare and publish Educational Essentials for Holistic Nursing. A workgroup is currently in the process of drafting this document.

We need your assistance before we can proceed.

Please help us by responding to a few questions that follow in the survey link. Thank you for helping us advance Holistic Nursing.  It will take less than 5 minutes to complete and the deadline to respond is June 30, 2016.
The survey can be found at  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AHNursing
A list of 15 Things that Nurses and Patients Should Question has been published by the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), a member of the American Academy of Nursing's Choosing Wisely Task Force.  These items have been identified as treatments that may not always be necessary or in the best interests of women and newborns.

Some of these include:
  • Don't promote induction or augmentation of labor and don't induce or augment labor without a medical indication; spontaneous labor is safest for woman and infant, with benefits that improve safety and promote short- and long-term maternal and infant health.
  • Don't prescribe opioid pain medication in pregnancy without discussing and fully weighing the risks to the woman and her fetus.
  • Don't separate mothers and their newborns at birth unless medically necessary. Instead, help the mother to place her newborn in skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth and encourage her to keep her newborn in her room during hospitalization after the birth.
The List includes 11-13 items which are specifically relevant to neonatal care. For the full list go to www.aannet.org/choosing-wisely

A Reflection of Yourself - Conference App Game
Jim Welch A reflection of yourself
"A Reflection of Yourself" as seen in the picture of Jim
Congratulations to James "Jim" Welch, RN, HNB-BC for being the top participant in the 2016 Conference Mobile App AHNA Click Game. Jim earned a total of 470 points and posted over 90 pictures of his experiences during the 2016 AHNA 36th Conference held in Bonita Springs, FL.

The 45 participants in the "Click Game" accumulated over 590 pictures that were available for everyone to view and enjoy. The "Click Game" is similar to Instagram, where attendees take a picture and upload it to the mobile app. Pictures taken are interpretations of general descriptions of tasks provided in the game that earn attendees points and badges, as seen in the picture of "A Reflection of Yourself" taken by Jim Welch. The more tasks completed means more points and badges earned. To view a montage of pictures taken by Jim and other "Click Game" participants, click here.

The "Click Game" is not the only amazing feature in the AHNA conference mobile app. Attendees were able to view handouts and PowerPoints for CE sessions, follow maps that showed locations of CE sessions, events occurring during conference, exhibitor locations, and received important notifications. Attendees could even bookmark activities, exhibitors, and speakers so that they can go back and find them quickly. And last but not least, attendees were even able to connect with other attendees in the mobile app using the "Networking" that is similar to text messaging.

Attendees have continued access to the 2016 Annual Conference App until July 15, 2016. With over 278 users accessing the conference mobile app, it will be a guaranteed feature for the 2017 Conference in Ranchero Mirage, California next June where attendees will be focusing on "21st Century Holistic Nursing: Reshaping Health & Wellness."
