Researchers have identified the C4 gene as a possible link to the risk for schizophrenia. One form of the C4 protein made by this gene is produced at high levels in the brains of people with schizophrenia and may promote too much synaptic pruning in the brain, which can impair mental function. A new study reports that over half of all calories and 90 percent of the excess sugar calories in the average US diet comes from ultra-processed foods. These are foods like sodas, packaged snack foods and baked goods, and "instant" foods that don't require preparation. Researchers found that one in five calories in ultra-processed foods were from added sugars, a level up to eight times higher than in unprocessed or minimally processed foods. pain A recent study shows that mindfulness meditation helps relieve pain via a different pain pathway in the brain than opioid medications. The opioid antagonist naloxone did not block the pain-relieving effects of meditation in study participants. Researchers suggest that combining mindfulness-based approaches with those that rely on opioid signaling pathways may provide a more effective, synergistic pain relief effect.

Influenza Virus - 3D rendering This flu season is the mildest in the past few years, due in part to less severe weather and a vaccine that is a good match for the common flu viruses that are circulating. However, cases are still appearing in new areas and the flu season is expected to peak later than it did last year, so US health officials continue to advise people to get a flu vaccine if they haven't yet. FDA Propose Ban on Most Powdered Medicinal Gloves
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it has proposed banning most powdered gloves in the United States. While the use of these gloves is decreasing, the FDA believes they pose an unreasonable and substantial risk of illness or injury to health care providers, patients, and other individuals who are exposed to them, which cannot be corrected through new or updated labeling. The proposed ban applies to powdered surgeon's gloves, powdered patient examination gloves, and absorbable powder for lubricating a surgeon's glove. Read more.

Earth Day 2016 -
Trees for the Earth
Earth Day aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation for earth's environment. Each year on this day thousands of people celebrate the Earth and what it means not only to them, but to the human race as a whole. Nursing Opportunity
Pineview, NC

We are a personalized health care internal medicine practice.  We practice collaboratively and function as a team. Our patients are active participants in their health care and are our number one focus in our daily work.  We are adding a new member of our nursing staff as part of a job sharing position.

You are an RN still passionate about office nursing but are tired of the "churn and burn" atmosphere that medicine has become?  Are you also interested in developing a more personal relationship with those you care for during the course of your work day? You have a professional appearance, enjoy giving the best health care you can, and are patient centered?  You are not afraid of technology and advances in medical care, and believe that integrative medicine can enhance our more traditional Western medicine system.
