Dear CYO Athletics Community,

You might have seen or heard recently that Pope Francis came for a visit.  What a grace filled moment in the Catholic Church and in our country!  It is hard to not be both encouraged and challenged by his words and his witness.

In his homily at the Mass at Madison Square Garden, he reminded us that "the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light".

His visit prompted me to recall a new movie, Woodlawn, that is to be released on October 16.  It is a story about a high school in Birmingham, AL where there is significant racial division.  The story recounts how the football team of Tony Nathan, former NFL and Alabama running back, provided a vehicle with which their community could reconcile and come to believe in one another. READ MORE.

Youth Sport and Spirituality: Catholic Perspectives

Unsportsmanlike behavior by student athletes or parents at youth sporting events happens with regularity these days. Much recent research reveals that young people are dropping out of sport at alarming rates due to the often toxic elements in the culture of youth sports. The timely, innovative essays in YOUTH SPORT AND SPIRITUALITY published by Patrick Kelly, SJ, associate professor of theology and religious studies at Seattle University, present a wide-ranging overview that draws on resources from Catholic spiritual and theological traditions to address problems such as these, as well as opportunities in youth sport in the United States.
