This week the ZimmComm Team is off to World Dairy Expo courtesy of sponsor, New Holland. Lizzy and Jamie are there and you can find lots of stories being posted to Animal.AgWired.com. Today Cindy is in Kansas City with CEVA for their swine media event. Chuck is still posting stories from the Canadian Farm Writers Federation Annual Mtg. too. So, lots going on as the harvest kicks into gear.
Our last ZimmPoll asked about what sustainability mean to today's farmer. The answers are an indication of how many things the word means to the general public too. Instead of choosing just one answer 82% picked All of the Above!

60,000 Expected for National FFA Conference

Senator Toomey's Anti-RFS Amendment Tanks
Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) introduced an amendment that would eliminate corn ethanol from the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). It was promptly defeated by the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs by a vote of 15-7. Pro RFS supporters came out en masse against Toomey's amendment and thanked the Committee for making the right decision on consumer choice at the pump. MORE

Joule Receives EPA Cert for CO2 Ethanol
Joule's fuel grade Sunflow-E ethanol has been registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for commercial use in E10 and E15 gasoline blends. The fuel is derived from recycled CO2. MORE

Senators Urge Obama to Push Biotech in China
U.S. Senators John Thune (R-S.D.) and Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.), both members of the Senate Finance Committee and Senate Agriculture Committee, along with 42 other senators, have sent a letter to President Obama. This letter asks Obama to address the concerns of Chinese delay in accepting U.S. biotech while President Xi is in Washington D.C. MORE

Researcher Discovers Link in Understanding Pest
Nematodes are a billion dollar threat to agriculture each year. Plant scientists at the University of Missouri and the University of Bonn in Germany have discovered that nematodes use a specific hormone to help them feed on the plant. This discovering could allow scientist to develop plants with resistance to the pests. MORE

New Pro-RFS Group Formed
Former U.S. Senator Jim Talent from Missouri today launched Americans for Energy Security and Innovation (AESI), a new organization aimed at expanding support for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). AESI will focus its efforts on building support for a stronger RFS to reduce the country's dependence on foreign oil, stimulate domestic innovation and economic development in the biofuels sector and "work to create an environment to prevent regulations and restrictions to the renewable fuel industry by increasing support and mobilizing elected officials to support our efforts."
