Hello ZimmComm fans!

We've been busy on the Agriblogging highway this week. Chuck was in Minneapolis for two events - the Advanced Biofuels Conference and the AgCatalyst conference. Cindy visited the Everglades Agricultural Area on the annual CTIC Conservation in Action Tour and saw lots of cool stuff like barn owls being used for rodent control in sugarcane!

Next week is an off week for us so Chuck is heading to the Georgia hunting grounds. But, busy days are ahead with trips planned to Germany, National FFA, and California for the Crop Health Lab's Power Growers Seminar.

Winter Calf Barn Ventilation 101

Many calf barns rely on natural ventilation to provide clean, fresh air to calf pens. But, as the weather cools down and winter approaches, there can be a tendency to close the doors, windows and curtains on the calf barn in an effort to reduce drafts. Preventing cold air from blowing on calves can help keep calves warm, but when buildings are closed proper air exchange to keep calves healthy through the winter months can be prohibited. MORE

Dairy Operations Finding Success with CAFOweb

Dairy farmers in New Mexico are using a great new tool called CAFOweb. The online data management tool allows dairy farmers to better manage nitrogen. As Tara Vander Dussen and Jay Lazarus explained, nitrogen from manure solids and/or effluent can leach into the ground water is not applied at agronomic rates. In other words, said Lazarus, most dairies were not meeting ground water specs. Because of this dairymen requested a web-based predictive tool to manage their nutrients in real time and thus was born CAFOweb. MORE
