The ZimmComm Team has put in a few miles this week as Cindy attended the Bayer CropScience grand opening of their integrated research and development facility for biologics and vegetable seeds in Sacramento while Chuck was off to Deauville and Caen, France for the Alltech Global Dairy & Beef Expo and Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games and then on to Aberdeen, Scotland for the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists Congress. He'll be back to ZimmComm World Headquarters early next week. Yes, it's break time then.

 

Jamie attended the Hereford Genetic Summit in Springfield, Missouri and is featuring stories from there on Animal.AgWired and we continue to post stories from the Farm Progress Show last week on both AgWired and Precision.AgWired.com. Chris Novak Named NCGA CEO

The National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) has announced the appointment of Chris Novak as CEO of the association. He will be replacing Rick Tolman, who announced earlier this year he will be retiring after 14 years in the helm. Novak is currently the CEO of the National Pork Board (NPB) and will begin his tenure at NCGA on October 13, 2014. MORE

USDA Develops Switchgrass with Bigger Yield, More Biofuel 
 
Researchers working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have developed a variety of switchgrass that produces bigger yields and more biofuel. Rob Mitchell with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Nebraska gives credit to retired geneticist Ken Vogel who developed the Liberty variety of switchgrass. MORE

Protec Fuel Expands E15, E85 in the South

Protect Fuel is working with retailers in the South and Southeast to open 28 E15 and E85 stations. The announcement marks the first phase of an introduction of E15 to cities including Atlanta, Georgia and Houston, San Antonio and Dallas, Texas. Florida and Virginia will also be on the target list.  MORE 

Oberon Fuels Receives Biogas RFS Approval

 
Oberon Fuels has received approval as a renewable fuel under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its biogas-based dimethyl ether (DME) fuel. The company's biogas-based DME is now eligible for high value D-Code 3 (cellulosic) and D-Code 5 (advanced) renewable identification numbers (RINs). The EPA determined that biogas-based DME produced from the Oberon process resulted in an approximate 68% reduction in greenhouse gases when compared to baseline diesel fuel. MORE

In conjunction with the launch of the ExactEmerge™ planters and MaxEmerge™ 5 row units this year, John Deere introduced SeedStar Mobile to help producers better visualize, document, and access their planting data in real time. The new John Deere SeedStar Mobile solution uses an iPad to provide critical planting information producers need to better monitor and document their planter performance in the field. "With SeedStar Mobile, producers can instantly monitor planter performance and know with confidence that the planter is running at the highest level of precision and accuracy," said Diana Reed, associate brand manager for on-board applications, which includes Seedstar Mobile.

When it comes to winter wheat, "test plots" are planted that include currently-grown varieties, varieties being grown in neighboring regions, and promising new experimental lines. Data collected on each variety includes the usual yield, test weight and protein percentage. Other ratings sometimes captured, include winter-hardiness, plant height, lodging, maturity, and the disease reactions to fungal leaf spot, leaf rust, wheat streak mosaic virus, and fusarium head blight. A changing of the guard at GROWMARK, Inc. is happening this month and both incoming and retiring CEOs took the stage at the cooperative's annual meeting in Chicago last week. Jeff Solberg is retiring from GROWMARK after 38 years in a variety of leadership positions, including Senior Vice President, Finance, Vice President, Finance, and Treasurer. He was named CEO in November 2010 and assumed the CEO duties in January 2011. Zoetis Granted Conditional License for PEDv

 

Zoetis Inc. announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has granted a conditional license for a vaccine to help fight porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDv) in pigs. The two-dose inactivated vaccine, licensed for use in healthy pregnant sows and gilts, is designed to help them develop antibodies that can be transmitted to their newborn piglets. Zoetis anticipates the vaccine will be available to veterinarians and pork producers later in September. MORE
