Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  This month is jam-packed with activities - Red Ribbon Week, National Bullying Prevention Month, National Teen Driver Safety Week, Above the Influence Week, and more!  What do you have planned this month?

Registration Form Remember, ALL SADD chapters must renew their registration each school year.  This is the only way we know that the chapter is still running and that we have the correct advisor contact information.  Registration is free and takes two minutes online at sadd.org - and we'll send you a certificate and a poster as a gift once you renew.  Please, if you haven't already, will you take two minutes to renew your registration now?  Thanks to the many chapters that have already registered for this year - our October certificate mailing will go out this week.

Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate.  Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left.
Programs & Resources
bullying kit October is National Bullying Prevention Month.  There are lots of resources for your chapter to conduct an activity to help prevent bullying.  PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center is a good place to startWednesday, October 22 is their annual Unity Day, when students are encouraged to wear orange to show support for ending bullying.  Click here to learn more.  You can also check out SADD's Bullying. Not Cool. Bullying Prevention Resource Kit online here.

StopBullying.gov is another place to find resources.  They're asking you to highlight your bullying prevention activities this month by using the hashtag #StopBullying365.  For parents, check out the free KnowBullying smartphone app from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), which helps guide parents through conversations with teens to discover cyberbullying issues.  For more information, click here.

October 19-25 is National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW)Learn more at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Teen Driver Source, and consider implementing their Ride Like a Friend peer education program, which you can find here

During NTDSW, our friends at NOYS will also be holding their Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit.  Teams of youth from across the country will be headed to Washington for a few days of training followed by the Summit itself.  We're proud that SADD students from Alabama, California, Indiana, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were selected from a pool of applicants to get trained at the Summit and take the message home to their own states!  It's not too late to attend the Summit yourself - learn more about the Summit and registration here.

Above the Influence October 20-24 is Above the Influence (ATI) Week.  Now part of the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, ATI has designated different activities for each day of the week.  Visit atipartnerships.com to learn more and decide which of them your chapter will take on!

Mix It Up logo Tuesday, October 28 is the annual Mix It Up at Lunch Day.  On this day, students are encouraged to sit with a different group of students at lunch to break down barriers and reduce bullying.  Your SADD chapter can take the lead in planning this event in your school.  To learn more, visit mixitup.org.

Red Ribbon Kit October 23-31 is Red Ribbon Week.  This week of drug prevention activities is very popular with SADD chapters.  Put your own spin on Red Ribbon Week - look for resources on redribbon.org, check out SADD's free downloadable Think About It ... Homecoming & Red Ribbon Season campaign, or purchase the SADD Red Ribbon Supply Kit at the SADD Store.  What will your chapter do during Red Ribbon Week?
Spotlight on SADD Chapters
This monthly column highlights the impressive work chapters are doing around the country.  Want to see your chapter in the Spotlight?  Send news and a good group photo to fieldservices@sadd.org

Wyoming County SADD from Wyoming County, West Virginia, had the opportunity to meet with some national VIPs in the fight against drug abuse.  Their Congressman Nick Rahall brought national leaders to the community, and they discussed with SADD students the latest strategies in substance abuse prevention.  These leaders included Dr. Nora Volkow, the Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) (who was also honored by SADD at our national conference in Washington this summer);  Michael Botticelli, Acting Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP);  Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, Chief Medical Officer for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA);  and Dr. Daniel Sosin, Acting Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.  All are pictured above with members of the chapter.

Chartiers Valley High School SADD in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, held an event for Suicide Prevention Week in September.  Leading up to the week, they put up signage and posted on social media to build awareness and create an atmosphere of support.  Working with To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA), they distributed bracelets with the theme "No One Else Can Play Your Part."

Just about every SADD chapter was working on recruitment last month.  Spencerville High School SADD from Spencerville, Ohio, created a video to promote the chapter.  As a positive, upbeat recruiting piece with the theme "My Life, My Choice," the video featured SADD students mentioning the positive choices they make.  Check it out here.

Congratulations to all these chapters for their successful efforts!
Contests, Grants, and Awards
The National Road Safety Foundation and SADD are offering a new #drivingskills101 contest called Accelerate to Safety.  You're asked to create a 3-5 minute video focused on speeding by young drivers. To enter, fill out the questionnaire by November 7 with your ideas about how to reduce speeding.  The first 25 chapters to enter will receive a free toolkit packed with giveaway items, and there are still some of these kits available - so don't wait to enter!  For more information and to enter, click here.

Our friends at NOYS have launched the Seats Belts Save contest.  Register your school by October 17, and then over the next two months you'll conduct an initial seat belt survey to determine usage for your school, work to educate students about the importance of wearing seat belts, and then re-check with another seat belt survey to see how you moved the numbers.  Cash prizes are available for chapters that increase their usage the most, have the highest total usage, and the most creative education campaign.  To learn more and enter visit seatbeltssave.org.  Remember, you must register by October 17, so don't delay!

madd MADD has launched a new contest.  To celebrate Red Ribbon Week, everyone who downloads their free booklet, The 411 on Teen Drinking, during the month of October will be entered into a contest to win an Apple Watch when they're released next year!  To download the booklet and enter to win, click here.
2015 SADD National Conference
We're excited to share more details about the 2015 SADD National Conference, which will be held Sunday, June 28 - Wednesday, July 1 at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee.

We're just putting the finishing touches on registration, which will launch shortly.  But we can tell you that our inclusive price for conference, which includes the conference registration fee plus hotel accommodations for three nights and most meals, will be $779 for youth (quad occupancy) and $879 for adults (double occupancy).  There will also be a $55 optional off-site trip to the famous Wildhorse Saloon, where on a private, alcohol-free floor you'll enjoy a buffet dinner and line-dancing lessons.  You may also choose to entertain yourselves that night by taking the hotel shuttle to the Opry Mills shopping and dining complex nearby.

Registration will launch shortly.  We hope you'll consider joining us in Nashville next year!
SADD Store - Snuggle Blanket Sale!
SADD SnuggieAs your chapter gets back to work this school year, one place to check out is the SADD Store.  Offering plenty of SADD-branded gear - from inexpensive giveaways to resource kits - the SADD Store can help your chapter gain more notice, spread the word, and increase your impact!

This month, there's a sale on the SADD Snuggle Blanket.  This "stylish" item makes a great gift.  Break it out at fall football games, give it to your advisor or president to wear as a ceremonial robe at meetings, use it as a Halloween costume, or come up with other creative ideas.  Whether you wear it ironically or as a fashion item, the Snuggle Blanket will keep you warm and toasty as fall arrives!  Even better, it's now on sale for the bargain price of just $25.

To order, visit saddstore.org, email sadd@apisource.com, or call 1-888-608-6988.  Be sure to like the SADD Store Facebook page to keep up with all the latest deals and specials!
