Welcome to the first issue of The SADDvocate for the 2014-15 school year!  We're excited to kick off a new year, and SADD chapters all across the country are gearing up, recruiting members, and planning great activities to make a difference in their schools and communities!

Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate.  Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at [email protected]

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left.
This is the Year for SADD Nation to Shine!
My name is Madeline Seel, and I'm proud to be representing SADD Nation as your 2014-15 SADD National Student of the Year from the rolling hills of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania!

It's almost fall (my favorite time of the year) and that means you'll be back to school with friends, enjoying the beauty all around you, spending chilly nights watching Netflix under a fuzzy blanket, and getting your SADD chapter up and running once again!

Like you, I'm back at school, starting my freshman year of college at the University of Pittsburgh.  Back-to-school means getting back into your groove - new friends, new teachers, exciting classes, and so many chances to get involved!  Fall is the perfect time for your SADD chapter to jump back in and start planning for the new year.  Try inviting new people to come to your SADD chapter meetings or reaching out and making a new friend within your chapter.  Be sure to keep checking The SADDvocate for chances to get your entire chapter more involved - there are so many cool programs and contests you won't want to miss out on!

Each and every one of us has the power to change the world, one step at a time.  You all inspire me everyday, and I know this is the year that SADD Nation will shine!  Best of luck with your chapter this year, and stay SADDtastic!
It's Time to Renew Your Registration!
Registration Form If it's fall, that means it's time to renew your chapter's registration.  ALL SADD Chapters must renew their registration once EVERY school year, as this is the only way we know the chapter is still running and that we have the correct contact information for the advisor(s).

Registration is free and takes just two minutes online at sadd.org.  Won't you please help us keep our database current by renewing your registration now?  In gratitude, we'll send you a chapter certificate (suitable for framing) and a free poster.  Certificates are mailed monthly, and the first mailing went out September 10 for the hundreds of chapters that registered by September 9.

So if you haven't renewed your registration for this school year yet, please take two minutes RIGHT NOW to do so by clicking here!
Contests, Grants, and Awards
We're proud to announce our latest collaboration with our friends and partners at The National Road Safety Foundation#drivingskills101 is back, this time with a new contest called Accelerate to Safety, which asks you to create a 3-5 minute video that focuses on speeding by young drivers.

The contest has three parts - first, simply fill out the questionnaire with your ideas for how to address speeding among young drivers, and send it to us by November 7.  10 finalists will be chosen, and receive $100 to create a storyboard of their 3-5 minute video on the topic.  One grand prize winner will have their video professionally produced and distributed nationally, plus receive a prize of $2,500!  Don't wait to get started, as the first 25 chapters to enter will receive a free toolkit packed with giveaway items!  Click here for the application packet.

Our friends at State Farm are once again sponsoring Celebrate My Drive, a cool contest with massive prizes!  Here's how it works.  Register your high school by October 7, and from October 15-24, collect as many safe driving commitments online as you can.  Schools compete based on size, and there are 90 $25,000 grants and 8 $100,000 grants for the winners!  Two grand prize winners will receive a $100,000 grant plus a concert at their school by The Band Perry.  We're proud that many SADD chapters have taken home $25,000, $100,000, and even the grand prize in past Celebrate My Drive contests, so let's shoot for even more success this year!  Visit celebratemydrive.com to register your school now.

Impact Teen Drivers is offering the Create Real Impact contest again this year.  Come up with a solution to distracted driving in the form of a video, song, essay, or artwork, and enter it by October 10.  Online voting from October 12-18 picks a winner in each of the four categories, who will receive $500.  Three schools with the most total entries in the contest receive $1,500.  A panel of judges picks a grand prize winner in each category that receives $1,500.  So what are you waiting for?  Head to createrealimpact.com to enter today!
Programs and Resources
null Monday, September 22 is CASAColumbia Family Day.  Research shows that families that eat dinner together (and have lots of interaction in general) have lower rates of teen substance abuse.  Family Day serves as a time to remember this, and spend time as a family.  The Family Day website contains a free activity kit, conversation starters, and more.  Some restaurants will offer Family Day specials for those who prefer not to cook at home, and your SADD chapter could help promote them.  To learn more, visit casafamilyday.org

October 19-25 is National Teen Driver Safety Week (NTDSW).  This is an ideal time for your chapter to work on traffic safety programs such as seal belt education, distracted driving prevention pledges, and more.  For more information, visit teendriversource.org.

The National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) 2014 Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit will take place in Washington, DC.  The Summit will consist of three days of training for teams of two students and one advisor and the one-day Summit on Capitol Hill on Monday, October 20.  Registration is open now (at a cost). For more information, click here.

October 23-31 is Red Ribbon Week, an anti-drug program that memorializes DEA Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camerena, who was murdered in the line of duty in 1985.  The official home of Red Ribbon Week is the National Family Partnership, and you can find resources at their redribbon.org website.  This year's Red Ribbon theme is "Love Yourself. Be Drug Free."

Red Ribbon Kit SADD also offers Red Ribbon resources, including our Think About It ... Homecoming and Red Ribbon Season campaign, which can be downloaded from our website for free here.  The SADD Store offers Red Ribbon giveaways and a kit - see the SADD Store article below for more information.

Start your planning now - SADD Shines Day will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2015.  This is a day to celebrate all things SADD, and there is a toolkit with suggested activities.  Last year, SADD chapters across the country came up with innovative ways to carry on the "Shine" theme, and we're hoping for even more creative ideas this year!  Look for more information soon - but mark it on your calendars now!
SADD National Conference
The 2014 SADD National Conference, Life is a Jungle: Join the Expedition was a major success.  From dynamic keynote speakers to skill-building workshops; touring DC monuments to advocating for SADD on Capitol Hill, attendees had a lot of fun and learned a lot.  Click here to see a video slideshow of highlights from the conference, and click here to see the conference as told through social media posts in a Storify format.

Our 2015 SADD National Conference will be held at the Sheraton Music City Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee from Sunday, June 28 - Wednesday, July 1.  Stay tuned for pricing, details, and the launch of registration soon. We hope to see you in Nashville!

Red Ribbon Week is a time when almost every SADD chapter is working hard on the issue of drug abuse.  Be prepared with the Red Ribbon Supply Kit from the SADD Store!

Packed full of useful supplies - from a durable banner you'll use for many years to giveaway items like pencils, balloons, and of course, red ribbon - this kit will help you spread the word effectively in your school at a cost of just $175.00.  And yes, the SADD Store will accept purchase orders.
