Greetings!
Welcome to the October issue of The SADDvocate! October is one of the busiest months for SADD chapters, with tons of events happening throughout the month. Need some ideas? Read on! Have you registered your SADD chapter this school year? ALL chapters are asked to register once each school year so that we know your chapter is running, and we have the current advisor's contact information. Registration takes just two minutes, can be done online, is completely free - there are no dues or membership fees - and you'll receive a chapter certificate and a free poster. So what are you waiting for? Click here to register now. Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate. Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today.A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page. Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left. |
 | Programs and Resources
|
October is a busy month, with lots of possible activities for your chapter to take on. Read on to discover some great ideas! Most SADD chapters hold Red Ribbon Week activities each year. This weeklong event - October 23-31 - is organized around drug prevention in memory of murdered DEA agent Kiki Camerena. There are lots of places to look for ideas. SADD offers our Think About It ... Homecoming & Red Ribbon Season campaign, which you can download from our website for free. Supplement it with our Red Ribbon Supply Kit from the SADD Store. The "official" home of Red Ribbon Week is the National Family Partnership. You can find their site at redribbon.org, and there are planning guides and other materials available for your use. MADD has some additional ideas for Red Ribbon Week - focused on underage drinking - click here to check them out. October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. You can find resources in a number of places. SADD offers a free online Bullying Prevention Resource Kit packed with activity ideas and links to a wide variety of resources. Click here to view the toolkit. PACER's National Bullying Prevention Center founded the month in 2006, and you can find student event toolkits, classroom resources and more by clicking here. One centerpiece of the efforts is Unity Day - held this Wednesday, October 9 - in which students are asked to wear orange to indicate support for bullying victims. Click here to learn more about Unity Day. The Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice & Human Rights offers Project SEATBELT (Safe Environments Achieved Through Bullying Prevention, Engagement, Leadership, and Teaching Respect), which has tools for schools, communities, and parents. One major focus is Trick or Treat for Bullying Prevention, which uses Halloween trick-or-treating as an opportunity to spread the word about bullying prevention. Click here to learn more. October 17 is the second annual Above the Influence (ATI) Day. On that day, chapters are encouraged to run ATI activities - there are lots of simple and effective activities in the free downloadable ATI toolkit - and also post images of the ATI arrow logo on social media with the hashtag #ATIDay2013. There are customizable materials available to promote ATI Day - click here for more information. October 20-26 is National Teen Driver Safety Week. NTDSW is a perfect time to hold traffic safety activities. Initially founded by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), the week has grown to encompass more national organizations and efforts. You can check out CHOP's Ride Like a Friend peer-to-peer program online at ridelikeafriend.com. Finally, October 29 is Mix It Up at Lunch Day. This annual day encourages students to sit with different students at lunch, as the school cafeteria can be one of the most clique-ridden and divisive parts of the school day. By getting to know others better, even for one day, prejudices, misunderstandings, and bullying can all be reduced. Your SADD chapter can organize this event as part of improving your school's climate, and it's simple to do. Make sure you register your school on the Mix It Up at Lunch website. We hope your chapter is busy with lots of these activities this month!

 | Spotlight on SADD Chapters
|
Each month, we'll highlight SADD chapters across the country that are doing extraordinary things. Want to see your chapter in the Spotlight? Send news and a good group photo to cegan@sadd.org. Wallenpaupack High School SADD from Hawley, Pennsylvania, had a problem. They had a SADD bulletin board, but the information was outdated, and students passed by without it capturing their attention. SADD student Giancarlo Iona (pictured) took charge, recruiting other students and teachers to build an interactive mobile SADD kiosk. This was truly a team effort, with various school departments pitching in for construction, technology, and painting. The end result is an eye-catching kiosk that can be wheeled anywhere in the school, featuring a video screen showing PSAs and other SADD content, and brochure holders installed on the sides with current information about a wide variety of issues. Great job! To obtain their brochures, Wallenpaupack SADD went to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The SAMHSA Store (formerly known as the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information) offers a wealth of FREE materials. Visit store.samhsa.gov to learn more and browse the resources (note that with the current government shutdown, no orders will be processed until the shutdown ends). Two SADD students with national connections recently testified at the Ohio State House. Arian Braun of Upper Valley Career Center SADD in Piqua, Ohio, and Jason Demeter of Northwestern High School SADD in Springfield, Ohio, testified in support of House Bill 204, which would improve the state's Graduated Drivers License (GDL) law. Jason is a member of the SADD National Student Leadership Council, and Arian was one of 22 students chosen from across the country to participate in SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge), SADD National's advocacy training institute. Jason and Arian are pictured above with Ohio State Representative Rick Perales (R-Beavercreek), the sponsor of the bill. Changes in GDL laws in your state could save lives. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has a calculator that lets you compare your state's laws to the best in the country, and calculate the percentage of collisions and fatal crashes that could be prevented if the model law was passed. Click here to see how your state stacks up! Congrats to these SADD students and chapters - and check back each month for more exciting news!

 | Contests, Grants, and Awards
|
Check back every month in The SADDvocate to learn about new contests and grants your chapter can enter or apply for - and remember, your chances are better than you think! Here are just a few ideas.
In partnership with The National Road Safety Foundation, we're collecting proposals for the #drivingskills101 @UrTurn contest! Don't miss your chance to receive a FREE cash prize and a supply kit! It's simple: submit a proposal by October 16 for a campaign that reinforces driving skills - we'll even give you some ideas to get started in the application packet. The first 50 chapters to register get $100 and a supply kit with cool items like bandanas, a banner, and project tools and tips. We still have cash and supply kits available, so don't wait any longer to apply! Check out this promotional video put together by the SADD National SLC. Once you've submitted your proposal, conduct your campaign by late February and document what you did - send us pictures, videos, copies of press coverage, and a written activity report. You'll have a chance at big prizes - up to $2,500 for your chapter! Click here for the application packet. The Create Real Impact contest is sponsored by our friends at Impact Teen Drivers. What would you do to reduce distracted driving? Explain your solution in a video, song, poster/t-shirt design, or written essay, and enter it into the contest by November 1. Then from November 2-8, get as many people as possible to vote for your entry online. Entrants with the most votes become finalists, and judges pick the winners from this pool, with prizes of up to $1,500! Visit createrealimpact.com for more information. With Red Ribbon Week approaching, it's time again for the Red Ribbon Photo Contest. Decorate your home's front door, fence, or mailbox with the 2013 Red Ribbon Week theme: A Healthy Me is Drug Free. Submit your photo by November 4, and then encourage family, friends, and your school and community to vote for your photo in November. Regional winners will each take home an iPad and $1,000 for their school. Click here to learn more.
Drinking alcohol before you're 21 is illegal and can seriously impact your health, ability to get into college, and even future employment opportunities. It's just not worth it! So MADD asks in their Power of You(th) Video Contest, "If You Don't Drink Alcohol Today, What Could Your Tomorrow Be?" Answer the question with a 15-second Instagram video, and your 15 seconds could be worth $1,500! Both the contest winner AND the school that submits the most entries will win $1,500! Submit your video by December 20 for your chance to win. Visit madd.org/youthvideo for more information and to enter. |

 | SADD National Conference
|
Registration will open soon for the 2014 SADD National Conference, Life is a Jungle: Join the Expedition. The conference will be held at the Sheraton Premiere at Tysons Corner just outside Washington, DC, June 22-25, 2014! Besides the tremendous conference speakers, skill-building workshops, and fun activities, you'll also participate in a special rally on Capitol Hill and visit your legislators to press for SADD's legislative priorities.
Two reminders: We're offering an early-bird discount for those who register by March 15, 2014. The student rate (quad occupancy) will be $729 and the adult rate (double occupancy) will be $829 if you register by that date - and that rate covers the conference registration fee, three nights' hotel accommodations, on-site conference activities, and most meals.
The 2014 conference has, for the first time, been added to the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Approved List of Contests and Activities. This recognition may help your chapter more easily raise funds or obtain permission to attend the conference if school is still in session at the time of the conference.
Check sadd.org later this month for registration! |
Remember that the SADD National Field Services department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without state coordinators. Just call 1-877-SADD-INC, ext. 223 or email fieldservices@sadd.org for help! Thanks for reading this issue of The SADDvocate, and thanks for all the work you do in your SADD chapters!
Sincerely,
Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services SADD National |
