Greetings!
Welcome to the last 2012-2013 school year issue of The SADDvocate! We had a great year with new programs, projects, and partners, and we know from press clippings that you did too - SADD chapters got a TON accomplished this year! We hope next year is even better. Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate. Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org. Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics. You can view every issue in our online archive. This issue will be posted to the archive later today. A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page. Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well! Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left. |
 | We're Taking a Break! |
Just as schools take a summer break, so do we. The next issue of The SADDvocate will be sent in September - there won't be issues in July or August. We won't be retreating to a tropical paradise - we'll continue to work to prepare for our national conference in Orlando beginning June 22; our youth advocacy institute, SADD SPEAKs, in D.C. this July; and on new program ideas for the upcoming school year - so the SADD National office will be open throughout the summer. If your chapter works together during the summer (as part of a coalition or other group), you might check out our Summer Waves campaign. We hope you enjoy your summer break!

| SADD National Conference - Don't Miss It!
|
The 2013 SADD National Conference: Decades of Change is approaching quickly, but there's still time to register! The conference will be held June 22-25 at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista in Orlando, Florida - right next to Downtown Disney! RegistrationThe conference registration deadline was June 1 - but we still have limited space, even if you want to attend at the last minute. To register, contact Kendall Meeker at WorldStrides (our conference logistics partner) directly at 434-951-5826 or kendallj@worldstrides.org. Speaker AuctionMany of our keynote and Speaker Showcase presenters have generously donated a speaking engagement to our conference silent auction, which supports SADD's college scholarships and Student Leadership Council. The winning bidder pays that amount plus the speaker's travel costs to bring them to your school on a mutually-agreed-upon date! There have been some great deals for your favorite speakers at past silent auctions. Here's a list of the outstanding speakers available in our silent auction - be sure to click through and check out their websites! For chapters coming to conference, bring a check or purchase order to secure a speaker. This year, we also want to open the bidding process to those of you not coming to conference! Here's how it works - send an email with your highest bid (minimum $500) to us, with the speaker name you're bidding on along with your name, address, daytime phone, and either purchase order information or notification that you'll be paying by credit card. Bids must be received by noon on Monday, June 24th. Your bid will be entered on the bid sheet 30 minutes into the auction that evening. If your bid is the highest, we'll be in touch with all the details you'll need to schedule your speaker's visit. To bid or for more information, contact Robin Hounslow at 1-877-SADD-INC (723-3462), ext. 248 or at rhounslow@sadd.org. Conference BanquetOne highlight of conference is our banquet, when we come together to honor our national award winners. We also want to celebrate what YOU'VE done! Share 5-7 pictures of your chapter in action, and we'll add them to our banquet slideshow so you can be recognized for all your hard work! Send photos to Julie Nussbaum at jnussbaum@sadd.org. Please put your chapter's name in the subject line of the email, and submit your pictures by June 14 so we have time to add them before conference. We look forward to seeing many of you at conference!

 | SADD Store - Prepare for Next Year!
|
The school year has ended for many, and the rest will be finishing up soon. Planning for next year's SADD activities can begin now! Why not invest any leftover funds to purchase supplies to get the next school year started right? The SADD Store offers this attractive and durable SADD banner, with a message describing the organization and heavy-duty, double-stitched seams and grommets. Use it at your school's club fair in the fall to recruit new members and at all your awareness events throughout the next few years!

 | Spotlight on SADD Chapters
|
As this school year comes to a close and chapters wind up their activities, we wanted to share with you a few great stories we saw this month!
Bloomfield High School SADD from Bloomfield, New Jersey, suffered a tragedy at the beginning of the school year, as student Christina Lembo was killed in a crash. In her memory, Bloomfield SADD installed a new speed limit sign at the site of the crash, with special solar-powered flashing lights designed to catch the attention of passing drivers. The sign was funded by DCH Auto Group's BMW of Bloomfield (which helps support the SADD chapter) and the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey through their "Champion Schools" program. At the dedication of the sign, students shared their personal commitments to driving safety. Congrats to Bloomfield SADD for turning tragedy into positive action to keep others safe! Nearly 100 SADD chapters from across the country participated in the annual NOYS Act Out Loud contest. This year, chapters had to put on a safe driving rally or fair, and submit a video showing what they had done. You can see videos on the team pages at actoutloud.org. Here's one great example from Darien SADD from Darien, Connecticut: | Darien SADD Safety Fair 2013 - Act Out Loud Video Submission | Lots of SADD chapters held safety events in advance of their proms. Ionia High School SADD from Ionia, Michigan, held an entire week of activities! Called SADD Spirit Week, the week featured safety messaging, speakers, a mock crash, student prom safety pledges (pictured), and more. Ionia SADD collaborated on the week with their county health department and a local insurance agency, and received a grant for programming from the Ionia Youth Foundation. Congratulations to all these chapters for their efforts! If you'd like to see your chapter featured in the Spotlight, send news and a good group photo to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org. Material from local newspapers was used to prepare this report. Click images for original articles.

Our friends at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) are recruiting for their Teen Advisory Group (TAG). Open to students in grades 8-11, TAG will meet online and via conference calls beginning this September through August 2014. TAG will meet four to six times a year in the evening, and will help NIDA develop and refine NIDA for Teens materials. TAG members receive a $25 stipend for each meeting they participate in. Interested? Applications are due by June 30, so don't wait! To request an application, email NIDATAG@iqsolutions.com. If you haven't checked out the NIDA for Teens website, what are you waiting for? There are great materials available there! Discover more at teens.drugabuse.gov. Many of you have requested your free copy (shipping charges may apply) of Smashed: Toxic Tales of Teens and Alcohol. There are still copies available - but we're not sure for how long! This compelling DVD from RADD and HBO Family was filmed at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and focuses on the lasting effects of impaired driving collisions when the victims survive. There are also useful classroom discussion materials available for download. The DVD was released in 2005 and has been reprinted twice before - and both times was quickly out of stock. We continue to get calls from chapters looking for the DVD, so if you want your FREE copy (shipping charges may apply), visit the SAMHSA Store today! Our friends at Do Something are asking you to use the power of your thumbs to save your friends from texting while driving in the return of their Thumb Wars campaign. It's simple: sign up at DoSomething.org/thumbwars to receive a free pair of 'thumb socks" in the mail. Pick a friend who texts while driving, and give them the socks in a surprising way and ask them to stop this dangerous behavior. Send in a picture of you and your friend wearing the thumb socks, and you could win a $5,000 scholarship! Register to get your thumb socks today!
