Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  Spring has sprung, and that means SADD chapters are extremely busy, with prom, traffic safety, and other events piling up.  What do you have planned this month?

Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate.  Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left.
Programs and Resources
SPEAKs logo It's not too late!  There's still time to apply for SADD SPEAKs!  This intensive advocacy training program is open to SADD students currently in their sophomore or junior year in high school, and includes a four-day advocacy training program this summer in Washington, DC.  All costs (including airfare, hotel, meals, and training) are covered, with participants asked to pay only $100.  We're selecting 16-20 outstanding students to participate, but the application deadline is Monday, April 15!  So don't wait - apply now.  You can learn more and download the application by clicking here.

The arrival of spring also brings proms.  SADD chapters work hard every year to keep students safe at this memorable event.   Need some activity ideas?  Check out our Prom Toolkit, which features our Think About It ... Prom and Graduation Season campaign as well as simpler activity ideas - and don't forget the Prom Kit for sale in the SADD Store that's stuffed with giveaway items!

Remember that while mock car crashes are fun to put on and attract media coverage, studies show that they're very limited in their impact on behavior.  Take a comprehensive approach, using the mock car crash as just one piece of a larger prevention education strategy.  Check the Toolkit for more information.

April 26-28 is Global Youth Service Day.  GYSD is the largest youth-driven service event in the world, with thousands of youth service projects taking place around the globe.  If you're holding a service event in your school or community, make sure to register it on the gysd.org website, so your hard work gets recognized!  Looking for service ideas?  See our SADD Serves: Youth Giving Back toolkit, which you can download here.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month.  If your chapter is looking for something to do, AT&T's It Can Wait campaign is a good place to start.  The itcanwait.com website features personal stories, student-created PSAs, and more.  You can also download resources for schools, including fact sheets, parent-teen contracts, event and activity ideas, and more.  AT&T's The Last Text 10-minute documentary is compelling and can be shown in class using a laptop and projector.  AT&T has also introduced a virtual distracted driving simulator.  You can use this simple online simulator (available at itcanwaitsimulator.org) at an event on a laptop or purchase an inexpensive wheel-and-pedals gaming kit online to make it more realistic.  We hope your chapter continues working on this important safety issue.

April is also Alcohol Awareness Month.  MADD has designated April 21 as PowerTalk 21 day - a day for parents to talk to teens about underage drinking.  You'll find tips for parents, how to start the conversation, and more at the PowerTalk 21 website.

Above the Influence Above the Influence has a new, fully-revised ATI Activities Toolkit available, with brand-new activities!  ATI is best-known as a messaging campaign for teens, with more than 1 million "likes" on Facebook and compelling PSAs - but ATI activities are just as great!  The ATI Activities Toolkit is packed full of easy-to-implement and fun activities that engage students and make a difference.  New activities are Picture It, which features a discussion about the pressures and risks around prom and graduation season, then asks teens to share photos of these events; and D.Driver, which uses video games and real-life scenarios to help teens understand the risks of driving impaired or distracted.  To download the new ATI Activities Toolkit, click here.

national day May 1 is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.  On May 1, please promote the National Day Quiz to your school - found on StayTeen.org - and join the hundreds of thousands of teens who take part each year in this eye-opening quiz.  For more information about the day, click here.

May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month, and there's a lot going on!  We encourage all SADD chapters to hold a traffic safety event during May - a safe driving rally, seat belt survey, quick-click challenge, distracted driving pledge drive, or whatever else you'd like to do.  You can also participate in the Long Short Walk to call attention to the issue.  What is your chapter going to do?

The federal government's StopBullying.gov program now has a new Tumblr page filled with motivational messages.  Check it out, and if you have a Tumblr account make sure to follow the page and share!  The main StopBullying.gov website also has lots of great resources, stories, and ideas for things your chapter can do to reduce bullying in your school.
Contests, Grants, & Awards
dollar sign Last chance to apply for a SADD National College Scholarship!  The deadline to apply is April 19, so don't wait - submit your application now!  We're handing out 10 $500 scholarship awards to deserving SADD students.  You must be a senior in high school committed to attend a two- or four-year college in the fall, and an active member in a registered SADD chapter.  Check out the eligibility criteria and then download the application.

A reminder that we're searching for outstanding activities, advisors, and chapters to honor with the Best of SADD National Awards.  The awards recognize SADD efforts between April 2012 and April 2013.  There are cash prizes for the winners and recognition at our national conference.  So if you have a cool advisor, did an amazing activity, or think your chapter should be a role model for others, apply now!  Nominations are due May 1 Click here for the details.

The second annual Great American NO BULL Challenge asks you to create a 30-60 second PSA or a 2-5 minute short film on bullying.  Your PSA or film should speak to the importance of standing up to prevent bullying and creating a positive school climate.  Your video must be uploaded by April 30, and then you'll work to make it go viral by collecting online votes.  There are some big prizes and an award gala - click here to learn more!

Make sure to check out SADD's Contests, Grants, and Awards page on our website regularly for deadlines, links, and more.  Your chapter can earn big money!
SADD National Conference
The 2013 SADD National Conference: Decades of Change is approaching quickly, but there's still time to register!  The conference will be held June 22-25 at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista in Orlando, Florida - right next to Downtown Disney!

At conference, you'll find dynamic keynote speakers, skill-building workshops, plenty of fun team-building and networking activities, an exhibit hall packed with booths with valuable information for your chapter, and more!  Educators attending can receive Professional Development Points through WorldStrides, our conference logistics partner.

Once your group registers, make sure you check out the fundraising e-cards offered by WorldStrides.  You can customize an e-card with your information (you'll need your Trip ID number, which your group leader will get when you register), send it out via email to family and friends, and they can contribute online to your conference trip.  It's easy for you, easy for them, and easy for your advisor, too!  On the e-card page, scroll to the bottom, select card 4, and then enter your information and the email address of the recipient.

If you're ready to register or are looking for more information about conference, click here.  Students tell us this is a life-changing experience - so don't miss it!
SADD Store - Prom Kit
Prom season is a time when every SADD chapter is working hard to keep students safe.  If you're looking for an activity to take on, check out the SADD's Prom Kit, sold through the SADD Store.  It comes complete with SADD's Think About It ... Prom and Graduation Season campaign in a binder, plus great giveaway items to promote the campaign.  It's in stock and ready to ship out to you - and purchase orders are accepted!

Spotlight on SADD Chapters

SADD chapters are doing so many great things around the country that it's hard to pick and choose which ones to highlight!  But here's a sampling of just a few.

Many SADD chapters participated in Kick Butts Day on March 20, sponsored by our friends at the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.  One such chapter was Western School of Technology and Environmental Science SADD from Baltimore, Maryland.  SADD students convinced 400 of their peers to pledge to stop smoking or never start.  They also picked up nearly two pounds of cigarette butts near the school.  The highlight of their efforts was a special flash mob at a dance (pictured), where they held up messaging about the dangers of smoking.

Breckenridge High School SADD from Breckenridge, Minnesota, took advantage of parent-teacher conference night to hold a unique educational event for parents with the help of the Wilkin County Youth and Community Prevention Coalition.  For their "Hidden in Plain Sight" display, students set up a mock bedroom and placed items used to conceal drugs or drug paraphernalia in the room.  Parents had their eyes opened to important signs of drug abuse that they may otherwise have missed.

Pampa High School SADD from Pampa, Texas, worked to recognize Child Abuse Awareness Month with their local CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) group.  To call attention to the impact of child abuse, they placed 209 blue vinyl t-shirt signs in front of supportive local businesses with a banner explaining that there were 209 confirmed child abuse cases in their eight-county area last year.  This simple activity is eye-catching and delivers a powerful message.  Pampa SADD students have collaborated with CASA on this effort for a number of years.

Youngsville High School SADD, from Youngsville, Pennsylvania, is planning a town meeting to talk about drug and alcohol use by teens in the community.  The meeting will talk about the positives as well as areas of concern, and students are planning and running the meeting as part of a grant.  Impressively, SADD students aren't just delivering platitudes, but are relying on local hard data from the Pennsylvania Youth Survey, which examines alcohol and drug use throughout the state every two years.  Besides their town meeting, students are also planning a county SADD conference and a presentation to younger students.

Congratulations to these chapters for their efforts!

If you'd like to see your chapter featured in the Spotlight, send news and a good group photo to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org.
