April is Alcohol Awareness Month

Help for Today. Hope for Tomorrow.

NCADD family

Alcohol Awareness Month, held every April, was founded by and has been sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) since 1987 to increase public awareness and understanding aimed at reducing the stigma that too often prevents individuals and families from seeking help.

NCADD also uses this important time to remind parents that:

  • Parents can play a key role in preventing teen alcohol and drug use by modeling positive behaviors.
  • Parents have far more influence
than we think - teens who have regular communication with their parents are
less likely to use alcohol or other drugs.
  • It is never too early to start talking. You have more influence over your teens' attitudes and decisions about alcohol before they start.
  • You are not alone! Every parent struggles with questions about whether they are doing the right thing for their teen.
To support parents, NCADD has created a number of online resources just for you.

NEW Driving Research from AT&T
Texting while driving considered a "habit"

According to a recent survey conducted by AT&T, nearly half of commuters self-reported texting while driving and 43% of those who did called it a "habit."

The survey also showed that:

  • Nearly half of commuters (49 percent) admitted to texting while driving, a higher rate than reported by teens (43 percent).
  • Six in 10 commuters said they never texted while driving three years ago.
  • Commuters are texting while driving despite knowing the risks. 98% said sending a text or email while driving isn't safe.

This new research is part of  AT&T's
It Can Wait campaign to raise awareness on the dangers of texting while driving.  The campaign has reached millions of teens and parents with the message that no text is worth dying for

SADD has partnered with AT&T to help spread the word by reminding parents that their own driving behaviors are closely watched and followed by their teens.

Thanks, Mom! Thanks, Dad!
We hear what you are saying

Just when you think your teen isn't listening, they can surprise you.  Here's what some of SADD's SLC members have to say:

"I love it when my dad always calls me his little girl just to make me smile." -  Miranda

"I love it when my mom sends me mid-day How Are You texts with embarrassing nick names.  For example 'How is my little cutie pumpkin pie doing today?'" - Mohammad

Keep talking, parents!
Your teen is listening and appreciates what you have to say.
