Greetings!

Welcome to another issue of The SADDvocate!  March is usually a month when SADD chapters kick into high gear - planning activities for the remainder of the school year, including prom and graduation and Global Youth Traffic Safety Month.  What is your chapter working on?  Let us know!

Our goal is to ensure that every SADD chapter has the latest news, so we're counting on you to help spread the word about The SADDvocate.  Please encourage all of your SADD chapter members to sign up on sadd.org, or send a list (spreadsheets preferred, with columns for first name, last name, and email address) to Chris Egan, SADD's Director of Field Services, at cegan@sadd.org

Sometimes school computer filters prevent students and advisors from seeing The SADDvocate properly, in full color with graphics.  You can view every issue in our online archive.  This issue will be posted to the archive later today.

A good source of regular SADD news is our Facebook page.  Please "like" our page today, and encourage your friends to do so as well!  Links to all our social networking pages are on the bar at left.
SADD SPEAKs - Apply Today!
SPEAKs logo We're proud to introduce our SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge) program for 2013.  We'll be selecting 16-20 outstanding SADD students to participate in an intensive advocacy training program over the rest of the year, with the centerpiece being a four-day visit to Washington, D.C. this summer.  All costs (including airfare, hotel, meals, and training) will be covered - but participants will be asked to contribute $100 to participate in the program as a sign of their commitment.

SPEAKs delegates will be asked to participate in online training prior to the summer meeting, and afterwards take lessons they have learned back to their states and communities, continuing their work through the end of 2013.  Past SPEAKs delegates went on to leadership roles with SADD on the national level, including service on the SADD National Student Leadership Council and even the SADD National Student of the Year!

To apply, you'll need to be a current sophomore or junior in high school with an interest in public policy and actively involved in a SADD chapter.  Your advisor will need to submit a letter of recommendation.  Applications are due April 1, so there's no time to waste - click here to learn more.
Programs and Resources
Here's a special message from Carrie Sandstrom, SADD National Student of the Year, about an exciting upcoming event.

Hey folks!  We all know that SADD students are some of the most passionate people out there.  Now, it's time to show it!  The SADD National SLC announces the first SADD Shines Day on Wednesday, April 10.  SADD Shines Day is your day to show everyone the power of students across the country to stand for a safe, healthy, and fun future!

So on April 10, put on your favorite SADD conference tee, your SADD sweatpants and your SADD zip-up hoodie.  Heck, wear your SADD snuggie to school!  SADD Shines Day is when you can share with your friends and community what it means to Be SADDtastic!  So, snap a selfie or a picture of a few of your SADD friends at school and show off your great SADD spirit.  Then upload the photo to the SADD Nation Facebook page and caption it by completing the phrase "I'm SADDtastic because ..."  It's time to show our SADD Nation pride.  Shine on, SADD!

Thanks, Carrie.  Now back to the rest of the news about upcoming programs and events...

Are you ready to stand out, speak up, and seize control from Big Tobacco?  Wednesday, March 20 is Kick Butts Day, and lots of SADD chapters are planning activities.  If your chapter is one of them, make sure to register your activity at kickbuttsday.org so your voice is counted!

We hope your chapter is considering participating in Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), which will take place April 26-28.  GYSD is the largest day of youth service in the world.  Need ideas for a service project you can take on?  Check out our SADD Serves: Youth Giving Back toolkit for service ideas, and visit gysd.org to register your event and download project toolkits.

May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month (GYTSM), and there's lots going on!  Wednesday, May 8 is the official kickoff, with launch rallies happening across the world!

May 6-12 is Global Road Safety Week and May 8 is also National Bike to School Safely Day.  One event that will take place during this time memorializes Zenani Mandela - Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter who was killed in a crash.  In her honor, The Long Short Walk was created.  During Global Road Safety Week, why not hold a walk (or roll, on bicycles) as part of this event?  You're encouraged to create signs saying why you are walking, and then post them online - you can find templates and more information on the mylongshortwalk.org website.

national day May 1 is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.  On the Day, chapters are asked to promote the National Day Quiz, which can be found on the stayteen.org website.  Hundreds of thousands of teens participate in the Quiz each year.  There are also promotional materials available for the day - click here to learn more.
Contests, Grants, and Awards
We are looking for the best - the Best of SADD, that is!  The Best of SADD National Awards are back.  We will recognize the Activity, Advisor, and Chapter of the Year, and we want to see some great nominations this year!  The awards recognize outstanding SADD efforts between April 2012 and April 2013.  If your chapter is doing great things, you think you have the greatest advisor in the nation, or you held a really cool activity, we want to hear from you!  Nomination forms are due May 1, so get started now.  To download the application form, click here.

Spotlight on SADD Chapters

SADD chapters all across the country are doing great things.  Here are a few stories we wanted to share with you.

North Torrance High School's Human Relations Ambassadors (HRA) SADD from Torrance, California, participated in SADD's Friends for Life campaign in February.  We're always happy to see that, but they decided to kick off the campaign in a unique way - an outdoor flash mob at school!  Check out the video:

Friends for Life

McKinley High School TeamSpirit SADD from Baton Rouge, Louisiana,  held two major events in February.  The first was to recognize Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and students signed a giant banner pledging to keep violence out of relationships and spread the word to others.  Valentine's candy was given to all students who signed the pledge.  Their other event was to hold a special Mardi Gras parade for two local elementary schools, handing out treats and demonstrating to younger students that this treasured Louisiana holiday can be celebrated substance-free.  They teamed up on this project with the school band, ROTC, and local prevention program I CARE

Lakeville South High School SADD in Lakeville, Minnesota, recently worked to create a food shelf to address the needs of high school students whose families are struggling to put food on the table.  They held a food drive, collected and sorted the food, and packed it into backpacks so students could take home needed food without embarrassment.  Check out the great news coverage they received from KARE 11, their local NBC affiliate, by clicking here.

Coxsackie-Athens High School SADD in Coxsackie, New York, got a jump start on Kick Butts Day recently.  They partnered with Rip Van Winkle Tobacco Free Action of Columbia and Greene Counties to work on banning tobacco advertising in New York State.  SADD students have been spreading the word in their school and community by citing statistics and information, creating a display seen above with SADD students.

Seneca Valley High School SADD in Harmony, Pennsylvania, also addressed domestic violence by collecting unused cell phones from students and the community.  The phones will be refurbished and given to local domestic violence shelters for distribution to clients as a safe means of communication.  To highlight the drive, SADD students collected phones at their Sadie Hawkins dance, and all proceeds from the dance were donated to a local organization that works with victims of violent crime.

Congratulations to all these chapters for their good work!  If you'd like to see your chapter featured in the Spotlight, send news and a good group photo to Chris Egan at cegan@sadd.org.
Remember that the SADD National Field Services department is here to provide help and support to chapters, especially those in states without state coordinators.  Just call 1-877-SADD-INC, ext. 223 or email fieldservices@sadd.org for help!

Thanks for reading this issue of The SADDvocate, and thanks for all the work you do in your SADD chapters!

Sincerely,

Christopher Egan, Director of Field Services
