On March 26, Saint Mary's introduced James A. Donahue, Ph.D., president and professor of ethics at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, as the 29th president of Saint Mary's College of California. He will begin his term on July 1, 2013. His extensive experience as a scholar, administrator and academic leader and his deep connections to the liberal arts, Catholic and Lasallian traditions make him uniquely qualified to be Saint Mary's next president.

YEAR OF THE GAEL 

Nearly 800 Gael alumni, family and friends pitched in on Saturday, March 16, for a Saint Mary's College of California/KTVU-TV community service initiative to help 21 Bay Area schools.
 
Saint Mary's welcomes Brother Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria, superior general of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, on Tuesday, April 23. He will serve as a respondent for a panel of Brothers discussing how Lasallian education is changing with the world today. He also will speak on Wednesday, April 24, about the mission of Lasallian education in the 21st century.

Saint Mary's Rings In
the New Pope
White smoke rose from the chimney of the Vatican and Saint Mary's rang the campus bell in honor of the election of Pope Francis I. Check out the photos and video!



Saint Mary's was again named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, one of the greatest honors a school can achieve for service-learning and civic engagement.
 
150th Commencement Speakers Announced
Newly confirmed U.S. District Court Judge Troy Nunley '86 will deliver the commencement address for the College's undergraduates. Robert "Bob" Ladouceur MA '89, the legendary former head football coach of De La Salle High School, will offer the commencement address for Saint Mary's graduate students.

The new Saint Mary's magazine focuses more on the intellectual life, traditions and values of the College and offers a variety of diverse voices that thrive on our campus. What do you think? Let us know here.
 
How does global competitiveness change with the increasing use of technology in business? SEBA will host a panel of chief executives, who will discuss how to prepare companies for emerging technologies, on Wednesday, April 17, in Santa Clara.  

 ATHLETIC NEWS

Postseason Appearances by Women's and Men's Basketball
Women's basketball took the WNIT by storm and advanced to the quarterfinals but could not hold off Utah in a 58-55 loss on Saturday. 

The Gael men's basketball team defeated
Middle Tennessee State in the NCAA tournament but fell to No. 6 Memphis in the second round. 
 
Grab your clubs and join Saint Mary's alumni, parents and friends at Blackhawk Country Club for the 34th Gael Golf Classic on May 13!  There will be on-course contests, tee prizes, awards, refreshments and a 19th hole reception with a silent auction to benefit the Gael Athletic Fund. RSVP by April 29 to save on entry fees.

Jog for Jill runs are held in honor of former Cal Women's Crew coxswain Jill Costello, who passed away in 2010 after a battle with lung cancer. Saint Mary's Rowing has participated in the runs, designed to raise funds and awareness in order to combat lung cancer, and hosted a run this past fall.   

 

Newest NCAA Team, Sand Volleyball, Gives Trojans a Battle
The sand volleyball team has been showing the NCAA its competitive prowess. After three straight wins, the Gaels were narrowly defeated by No. 3 USC.
