Students Embark on Academic Adventures During January Term  

Whether traveling throughout Rwanda, Haiti or Cambodia; exploring the Emerald Isle; experiencing Sundance or traversing the Bay Area, students continue to participate in extraordinary activities during Jan Term. Read their inspiring stories.   

 

January Term Speakers Inspire     

This year's Jan Term Speaker Series covered topics from "Changing the World 101" and documenting modern day slavery to one speaker's rediscovery of her Catholic faith. In addition hundreds of people came to the Chapel to listen to the spirited sounds of gospel music for the "Soulful and Sacred" event, which honored the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. Saint Mary's "Shark Tank"   

SMC business graduate students will present start-up ideas to a panel of angel investors in the 2nd Annual Saint Mary's College Business Idea Competition. The winner will receive $2,000 cash and get the chance to present his or her idea at the Angel Capital Expo, a Keiretsu Forum premier gathering of the angel capital community. Alumni, students, faculty and staff are invited to attend and vote on their favorite pitch.

 

SMC Accolades

  • The Macken Speech and Debate Team ranked #25 in the nation, the highest ranking in the team's history.
  • Saint Mary's Museum of Art received an Arts Recognition Award by the Arts and Culture Commission of Contra Costa and the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors for its contributions to the cultural heritage of the Bay Area, and Contra Costa County in particular.
  • The Performing Arts Department fall production of the play "Spring Awakening" was named a top theater production in our region by the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival and has been selected to compete for national awards.    

  • Join students, faculty and staff to
    listen to talks and presentations
    about modern education at the KSOE Distinguished Speaker Series. Calvin Terrell, a well-known public speaker on equality in education, will speak on "Enhancing a Learning Culture" on February 23.

     

    Alumni Legacy Scholarship 

    The deadline for the Alumni Legacy Scholarship application is fast approaching. All applications and materials must be submitted by March 4. Don't let your children or grandchildren miss out on this opportunity!  

     ATHLETIC NEWS

    Three-Point Madness:  

    SMC vs. BYU

    The Gaels men's basketball team trailed BYU by two points in the last few seconds of the game on January 16 and then Matthew Dellavedova heaved a three-pointer from mid-court just as the buzzer went off. It went viral as ESPN's play of the day. Did you miss it? Watch the replay.

     

    Men's Rugby Tours Italy 

    Men's rugby heads to Italy for the team's annual spring tour March 21-30, and you can win a trip to travel with them. Enter for your chance to win. 

    Men's Lacrosse Alumni and Parent Event a Success  
    Men's lacrosse hosted a fun-filled day for alumni, parents and fans. SMC lax supporters spent the day playing lacrosse, attending the men's basketball game and celebrating with a dinner and auction. See photos.

    Softball Fourth in PCSC Preseason Poll 
    The team begins the season with a trip to Hawaii to take part in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic on Feb. 7-9.
