Kristy Malamute, B.A. Rural Development
Class of 2000
I graduated from UAF with a B.A. in Rural Development, May 2000. Since then, I have worked in a number of positions. My first real job was working with the Louden Tribe in Galena as the Director of Tribal Operations. I lived in Galena for 10 months and then moved to another position working with the Fairbanks Native Association (FNA) with the Che'ghuten' Project, a partnership between UAF and FNA. My professional career began with UAF in 2004. I was first hired by the School of Education, in the Math in a Cultural Context (MCC) as an Administrative Assistant and was promoted soon after. After leaving MCC I started working with Interior-Aleutians Campus (I-AC) helping with the USDA Drumbeats Grant and Veterinary Science Program. I then began working as I-AC's Logistical Coordinator, moved on to become the Assistant to the Director, then to the HR/PPA position and I just recently got a new position as I-AC's Traveling Student Services Coordinator. I am excited for this new opportunity to help bridge rural Alaska students to our campus, resources and programs that we offer. My focus areas are the Nenana and Yukon Koyukuk Regions. In my off time, I love to spend time with my 7 year old son Alex, my boyfriend Barney, and my parents, Victor and Edith Nicholas. My son keeps me busy with snow machining, camping, hunting, and hockey. Healthy living, fitness, both spiritually and physically is a priority in my life.

RD F492 Rural Development Legislative Seminar Spring 2016, February 7-13 Submitted by Diane E. Benson, Assistant Professor
LEGISLATIVE SEMINAR 2016 - DANSRD
The Legislative Seminar is a premiere opportunity for students to witness and engage with government first hand, for the Alaska legislature to talk with higher-education students on rural issues, and for the University of Alaska to demonstrate the successes of the University of Alaska with rural students. The Spring 2016 Juneau trip of the seminar was a great success.
Students met with fifteen legislators in meaningful dialogue about general and specific rural and statewide issues, and about roles and operations within government. The legislators included the Senate President, the House Speaker, and Minority leaders. Students had the privilege and honor to be individually introduced to the legislative House and also had the privilege of meeting separately with Governor Walker and with Lt. Governor Mallott. It was particularly inspiring to meet with RD graduate and now Special Assistant to the Lt. Governor, Barbara Blake.
Tribal interactions were of particular value to students last year, and this year students met with the Tlingit and Haida Central Council President, and the legislative liaison about their insights in working with government on tribal issues. These were very informative and validating. Other highlights included opportunities for students to meet over breakfast with the Democratic Women's Caucus, attend the Native Issues Forum, and the Sealaska Heritage Noon Lecture presentation by Dr. Felitti on the "Lifelong Effects of ACES." The most remarkable opportunities involved private meetings with two commissioners - Commissioner Davidson of (Department of Health & Social Services (DHSS), and Commissioner Williams of the Department of Corrections (DOC). Students also attended a variety of legislative committee hearings, including the Education Committee, House Finance subcommittee, and the Judiciary subcommittee. Students had the rare opportunity and experience to sit in the Chamber during a Joint Session to hear the State of the Judiciary Address from Chief Justice Stowers.
Perhaps the most enjoyable was the joint hosting of a reception for the legislature with Tlingit & Haida Central Council and the Alaska Regional Coalition. DANSRD was listed as a partner again this year. Students brought foods from their region to share and took time to cook and help set up for the event. The reception allowed students time to converse with legislators and make acquaintances; time well spent for those who will want to utilize those connections when they return to their respective communities.

Elizabeth Peratrovich Day Celebration
The student group, Natives for Positive Change (NFPC), held another successful celebration of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day on UAF's campus. The event, which took placed on February 20th, featured a potluck of traditional Alaskan Native foods, a performance by Inu-Yupiaq, and a panel of distinguished speakers including Enei Begay, Samuel Johns, and April Lynn. The panelists addressed a crowd of approximately 80 attendees and shared about their work on a range of initiatives including climate justice, the Fairbanks Four case, and the Anchorage -based Forget-Me-Not movement. NFPC would like to thank all those involved who supported the event and hope that it will inspire more to get involved with making positive change in their communities.
