Oasis Charter School Students Visit City Hall - On May 26, over 50 students from Oasis Charter School visited City Hall to learn about City government. They were welcomed by Mayor Gunter who gave them an exciting look into City Council and how the City works.

Congratulations to Chief Rodriguez! - On May 2, 2017, Fire Chief Ed Rodriguez was re-designated as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) by the Commission on Professional Credentialing. The Center for Public Safety Excellence commends the Chief on his education, leadership, and management skills in the fire and emergency services profession. Congratulations Chief!

June 4th is National SAFE Day! - One in every three households in the United States has a gun stored somewhere inside. The Brooklynn Mae Mohler Foundation is committed to ending senseless child deaths through education of responsible gun ownership, and empowering parents to ask about guns in the places where their children visit. Secure storage is vital to the safety of children and is the responsibility of the gun owner.


Here are some simple rules to follow:


S- Secure all firearms in the home

A- Ask the question about unsecured firearms in the homes your child visits

F- Frequently talk to your children about the dangers of firearms

E- Educate and Empower others to be SAFE

Salinas Animal Shelter Volunteer Opportunities - Looking to help out in your community? Salinas Animal Services is looking for volunteers ages 16 and up who want to make a difference at their local animal shelter. Current volunteer opportunities include (but are not limited to) morning cat cleaning, dog walking, afternoon dog feeding, and special events. The shelter asks for a minimum of 8 hours each month for a period of 6 months and will provide training for all opportunities.

Chinatown Revitalization Plan Hosts Second TAC and Working Group Meetings - On May 17, 2017, the Community Development Department in conjunction with the neighborhood stakeholders, residents, property and business owners, service providers, and the Asian Community continued with its second Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and Working Group meetings. This meeting discussed the neighborhood existing conditions (land uses, zoning, building patterns, transportation and economic conditions), plan area boundary and its possible extension to include the residential block across from Sherwood Drive, the community safety recommendations made by the Chinatown Homeless Action Team (CHAT) as well as proposed future survey and outreach opportunities for the planning effort.
