Salinas Selects Firms to Design and Build New Public Safety Center

Salinas, CA -- At its meeting this evening, the Salinas City Council agreed to enter into a pre-development agreement with construction management firms Griffin Structures and Swinerton Builders (operating as a joint venture), along with architects LPA Inc., to design, build, and deliver a new Salinas Public Safety Center.

The Center, to be located in the Alisal Marketplace at 312 East Alisal St., will replace the existing police station, which was built in 1958.

Building a facility that meets current public safety needs has been a City priority for several decades. Measure G now provides the necessary funds, estimated at $49 million, to move forward with the project.

"This will be a big step forward," said Police Chief Adele Fres. "Our job has grown and changed a lot over the decades, with new technologies, new policing techniques, and much more. A modern station is a key part of fulfilling today's mission."

Griffin/Swinteron and LPA were selected after a public solicitation process that began on December 10, 2016, and resulted in a candidate pool of five teams.

"Griffin/Swinerton and LPA bring long resumes of successful public projects of this kind," said Assistant Public Works Director Don Reynolds. "Together they've designed police stations locally and in southern California.

"We had many very good proposals, but throughout the selection process this team consistently showed they were the best qualified for this project."

The firms have worked with the City before. Swinerton worked with the City to complete the Monterey Street Garage, LPA worked with Griffin on the Watsonville Civic Plaza project, and LPA worked with the City and McClaren Wilson & Laurie Inc. on the Police Department needs assessment completed in 2014.

The City and the development team are working towards opening the new Public Safety Center in October of 2019.
