As Community Power Agency Starts Up, Mayor Gunter Appoints McShane, Corpuz to Boards
Salinas, CA -- Mayor Joe Gunter has appointed Council Member Steve McShane and City Manager Ray Corpuz to represent Salinas on the Policy and Operations boards, respectively, of
Monterey Bay Community Power.
MBCP is a newly-formed Joint Powers Authority that seeks to provide clean electricity to the region while keeping money, and control, local.
"Through its energy choices and through reinvestment, MBCP is going to help Salinas and the region grow sustainably," said Mayor Gunter. "We're all excited to see it get going, and I'm glad we'll have leaders like Steve McShane and Ray Corpuz helping to guide it."
According to its website at
montereybaycca.org, it aims to "provide electricity to residents and businesses throughout Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz Counties through the new Community Choice Energy (CCE) model."
"CCE enables communities to choose clean-source power at a cost equivalent to PG&E, while retaining PG&E's role in maintaining power lines and providing customer service. The CCE model helps ensure local economic vitality because money from rates paid by local customers stays local. Surplus revenues that would normally flow to PG&E will stay in the community to help fund renewable energy projects, create jobs and stimulate the economy."
The first joint meeting of MBCP's Policy and Operations boards is expected to take place at the Marina Library Community Room in late April or early May.
MBCP members include local cities, the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz County, the Monterey Bay United Air Pollution Control District, the Monterey Regional Waste Management District, and the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority.
