Opportunities Still Open for Residents to Help Lead Planning for Future of Alisal

Salinas, CA -- The City of Salinas still has openings for residents to join the Steering Committee for the Alisal Vibrancy Plan. Applications will be accepted through March 31.

The Alisal Vibrancy Plan will be a community-created plan designed to improve the quality of life for East Salinas families by creating a safer, healthier, and thriving neighborhood. The Plan also will enhance business and career pathways.

The Steering Committee will guide the plan's content and help the City outreach to make sure the plan reflects the ideas of the community.

To ensure a community-driven process, at least two-thirds of Steering Committee members will be Alisal residents, reflecting the area's demographic and geographic composition. The City seeks applications from Alisal residents, parents, business owners, workers, youth, seniors, faith leaders, and others who have strong ties to the area.

The time commitment for Steering Committee members will vary over the course of plan development, with occasional peaks of about  6 to 10 hours per month. The City recognizes that meals, transportation, childcare, and language differences could be barriers to participation, and will work collaboratively with residents and stakeholders to overcome these and other challenges. Committee meetings will be held in the Alisal, after work hours, with food, childcare, and translation services provided.

About the Recruitment Process

On March 1, the City released Steering Committee applications in English and Spanish for the Alisal Vibrancy Plan and invited the community to lead this planning effort for East Salinas. To help spread the word, in addition to a press release and newsletter story, the City distributed physical copies at Cesar Chavez Library and the community centers around the Alisal and conducted a March 7 interview on Univision.

The application was developed in collaboration with a group of community organizers and agencies that work with Alisal residents every day and who have been working closely with the City since last November on the engagement strategy. This group will review applications and is responsible for selecting members.

The City is also using this network to go beyond typical communication methods. For example, Building Healthy Communities East Salinas has promoted the plan and Steering Committee in multiple interviews on Radio Billingue.
