Salinas to Celebrate Arbor Day with Planting of Native Oak Tree
Salinas, CA -- Community members are invited to join local leaders to celebrate Arbor Day with the planting of a native Oak tree this Friday, Oct. 21 at 1:30 pm at Cesar Chavez Park (see map below).
At today's City Council meeting, Mayor Joe Gunter will proclaim Oct. 21 as Arbor Day in Salinas.
For 22-years, Salinas has been recognized as a "Tree City USA" city by the Arbor Day Foundation. That status is achieved by "meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day," according to the Foundation ( https://www.arborday.org/programs/treecityUSA/about.cfm). "Many appreciate the beauty trees provide," said Mayor Gunter. "But they may not know this: trees are more than just beautiful additions to our streets and parks, they are essential contributors to our quality of life." The City has recently completed an inventory of its 31,000 publicly-owned trees, documenting the location and status of each one. Information can found at: http://salinas.mytreekeeper.com.
