Salinas delegation to visit Soke, Turkey for library donation and sister city dedication

Salinas, CA -- A delegation from Salinas will leave for Soke, Turkey tomorrow to donate murals, books, puzzles, and games to the sister city's library. Soke's library is undergoing a renovation that includes a brand new "Salinas Wing," which will be modeled after the Cesar Chavez Library.

The delegation will also participate in a sister city dedication, meet with the local government and Rotary club, and tour historical and cultural sites. Like Salinas, Soke is close to a coastal tourist destination and has an economy based on agriculture.

According to sister-cities.org, "A sister city, county, or state relationship is a broad-based, long-term partnership between two communities in two countries."

The Salinas group will be in Soke from Oct. 6 - 16. The delegation consists of city officials and members of Santa Lucia Rotary including Salinas City Council Member Steve McShane, Rotary District Governor Yavuz Atila, and Santa Lucia Rotary President-Elect Karen Worthington..

City leaders from Soke visited Salinas last August to tour City departments and places of interest, and met with local agricultural leaders.

Salinas also has sister city relationships with Cebu, Philippines; Ichikikushikino, Japan; Jerecuaro, Mexico; Guanajuato, Mexico; and Drogheda, Ireland.

The trip is being funded by the Santa Lucia Rotary and private donations.
