The Big Read challenge to Salinas:
Read a good book, and
enjoy reading, writing and art
Salinas, CA -- Monterey County residents are being called on to read one book by the end of October: Sun, Stone, and Shadows: 20 Great Mexican Short Stories (edited by Jorge F. Hernandez).
The Big Read is a program created by the National Endowment for the Arts to encourage Americans to come together by sharing a book. The program launched locally on September 16th with an event at the National Steinbeck Center, and will run nationally through November 1st.
During the Big Read, the Salinas Public Library will host a variety of special events and programs, including book discussions, an art contest, a FLASH fiction writing contest, a recipe swap, a historical walk and talk at the County Jail, and more. All programs are free and open to the public. A full schedule is available at www.salinaspubliclibrary.org/images/events/bigread2016.jpg.
The Library will also host five "Stories on Saturdays" events, which will feature discussions of stories from Sun, Stone, and Shadows, as well as creative activities inspired by the stories.
The Big Read is made possible by a $14,000 grant to the Steinbeck Center from the National Endowment for the Arts.
