Independent Gun Thefts Investigation Clears Police of Policy Violations

Salinas, CA -- An independent investigator has found that no policy violations were committed by police personnel whose guns were stolen recently.

Salinas City Attorney Chris Callihan announced the results of the investigation today.

The City Attorney retained an outside firm to investigate three incidents between March and May of this year, in which the Police Chief and two officers had guns and other personal property stolen from their vehicles. The purpose of the investigation was to determine, from an external, objective perspective, whether the Chief or the officers violated any Police Department policies in the manner in which they kept their guns in their vehicles.

The investigations have been completed and have determined that in the course of becoming victims of thefts, neither the Chief nor the officers violated Police Department policies.

"I'm satisfied with the results of the investigation," said City Attorney Callihan. "At the same time, we all understand and share the community's concern over the risks arising from these three incidents. We are going to review existing policies and search for ways we might be able to reduce the chances of something like this happening again."

Questions regarding the incidents or the subsequent investigations will be answered by the City Attorney's Office at (831) 758-7256.
