Reading Program Will Offer a Fun Way to Prevent "Summer Learning Loss"

Salinas, CA --The Salinas Public Libraries are offering kids a way to have fun during the summer break while also preventing "summer learning loss," the tendency of schoolchildren to forget some of what they've learned during the school year. The Summer Reading Program returns to the libraries June 4 through July 30.

The theme for this year is "Read for the Win." Children will keep a reading log, and when they meet their reading goals, they'll win books and other prizes. Throughout the summer, there will be activities, programs, and mini clinics at the libraries seven days a week, along with more prizes for children and free books for adults.

The program is open to kids of all ages, at no charge.

According to a 2010 study from Dominican University, children who don't take part in summertime educational activities experience learning loss, but public library reading programs can help them score higher on reading achievement tests and go back to school more prepared.

Families can sign up for the Summer Reading Program during opening ceremonies at all three Salinas Libraries (Steinbeck, Gabilan, and Chavez) on June 4 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. At these family events, there will be Olympic-style games for kids to play in for the chance to win prizes. Families can also sign up by visiting the reference desk at any library, at any time during the run of the program.

A flyer about the program can be downloaded from this temporary link.

More information, including details of special events, will be shared as summer approaches.
