2016 is already shaping up to be an amazing year for our association. This January saw our local past president, Randy Jones, sworn in as president of the Oregon Home Builders Association. At the same meeting our association was awarded two very prestigious honors. We not only won the state award for highest retained membership, amazingly we also won the award for best new membership performance by a large association! In 2015, we signed up over 60 new members! I would like to thank all of our members for working so hard to make our association so successful.
As many of you have already heard, because of the growth of our association, we have decided to rebrand ourselves to be more in line with our mission. We have literally outgrown our name and because of the work that we do that supports so many other areas of our industry we are rebranding as the Southern Oregon Builders Association!
Last year I attended over 100 local meetings of administrators and legislators carrying our message to the people who regulate our industry; bringing them the message that our industry is important because of all the economic benefits we bring to our entire community. Because of your support I am able to communicate our message in a way that helps them understand the ways that they can help us be more successful in all that we do. None of us is as strong as all of us and all of us pulling in the same direction can accomplish a tremendous amount of good and benefit our entire area. It is so exciting to see how much good our industry does for the entire community. In our next newsletter you will hear about the amazing success of our most recent Southern Oregon Home Show. It's really hard to overestimate how important our industry is to our cities and communities. Stay tuned to hear more good news about our association in our improving market. Our goal is to help you be more successful, please let us know how we can be of help.
To your success,
Brad Bennington

Here's how the US housing market has been impacted by the 2008 crash
Older millennials, minorities, especially Hispanics, men and the wealthy in overheated housing markets were most likely to be displaced from homeowners to renters. The financial crisis of 2008 created the biggest disruption to the U.S. housing market since the Great Depression. From the top of the housing bubble roughly a decade ago until just recently, there's been a five percentage-point increase in the number of renters to owners to 43.3 percent from 38.5 percent. NAHB Now
The millennial generation is poised to make a significant impact on home design with its strong preferences for energy efficiency and smart-home technology; comfortable and workable kitchens; and more casual spaces, said speakers from NAHB and Better Homes and Gardens. But first, they have to move out of their parents' homes and into a place of their own, said NAHB Assistant Vice President for Surveys and Research Rose Quint. READ MORE

Reuters U.S. home resales rebounded strongly in December from a 19-month low and prices surged, indicating the housing market recovery remained intact despite signs of a sharp deceleration in economic growth in recent months. The National Association of Realtors said recently existing home sales jumped a record 14.7 percent to an annual rate of 5.46 million units, after being temporarily held back by the introduction of new mortgage disclosure rules, which had caused delays in the closing of contracts in November. The Bulletin
A Eugene Democrat has drafted a bill that would give cities more leeway to increase land supply so long as it's used for affordable housing. The bill is the latest development that shows lawmakers may be willing to ease land use regulations during negotiations about affordable housing. In exchange, the bill would end the 17-year ban on a type of local zoning that allows cities to require real estate developers to set aside a portion of their projects for low-income residents, known as inclusionary zoning.
