Land Stewardship Program Launch
Avatars
Sign up for your favorite Conservation Area!

Over the past 20+ years, Hollow Oak Land Trust has established six conservation areas in the Airport Corridor and our new stewardship program will boost ecological health and public access by involving more people and companies from the surrounding communities.

Starting with crew leader training Feb. 15 (details below), volunteers will develop leadership skills, become intimate with streams & wildlife habitat and work together in natural areas close to home.

Land Steward teams will be formed for each conservation area in Moon, Kennedy, North Fayette, Hopewell, Franklin Park, Robinson and Coraopolis. Volunteers even get to pick their own titles, such as Trail Tender, Critterologist, Plant Manager, Streamkeeper, Conservation Curator, Ranger, Marshal, Surveyor, Interpreter, Recorder of Deeds, Bridge Architect, Photo Journalist, Data Guru, Dumpbuster and Traffic Controller.

You can help by signing up today, spreading the word and telling your friends, neighbors and employers about this program. To register or for more info: (412) 264-5354 or info@hollowoak.org.

Nature Notes:  Tales from the Trail

On the frosty night of January 15, 2014, Hollow Oak co-led an Owl Prowl hike with National Aviary ornithologist, Bob Mulvihill. 35 hearty souls crowded into the parking lot at the Montour Woods Conservation Area, as well as the Montour Trail parking lot at Hassam Road in the hopes of hearing and perhaps even seeing an owl.

We hiked the 2-mile loop of the Oil Well Trail and the Meeks Run Trail, stopping occasionally to let the pro work his magic. Sure enough, with lights dowsed, we first heard screech owls responding to the calls, then one of the participants FELT one fly overhead...how did the owl know it was her birthday?! All were treated to the sight of not one but three different screech owls, including a mated pair that perched in the trees nearby. Who says you gotta stay indoors on a cold winter's night??
