Nature Notes: Indian Pipe (Montotropa uniflora)
One of the most distinctive native wildflowers now blooming in the deep shade of Hollow Oak's conservation areas is named "Indian Pipe" for its resemblance to the Native American peace pipe. This ghostly white plant has no chlorophyll so, instead of drawing energy from the sun, Indian Pipe draws nutrients from fungi in the soil, which in turn draw nutrients from the roots of beeches and pine trees. In its parasitic role, Indian Pipe plant doesn't seem to harm its hosts and its flowers provide nectar for small bumble bees. Keep your eyes peeled for this amazing member of our local ecological web.

Hemlock Trail Climbs Through Montour Woods
Thanks to Hollow Oak volunteers, a new hiking and biking trail is climbing from the mouth of Meeks Run through the forest to the upper reaches of the Montour Woods Conservation Area. The trail follows a series of switchbacks, climbing approximately 300 feet over a mile of trail. Join us Wednesday evenings to meet and work with other trail lovers. See details below.

Partnership Spotlight
Hollow Oak Land Trust works with other organizations toward a regional approach to conservation. Here are some recent collaborative efforts:
- Tree Pittsburgh is a Pittsburgh organization that protects and grows the urban forest. They train volunteer Tree Tenders, who learn how to plant and care for trees. Hollow Oak will be sending folks to their July 27th course, 9am-4pm at the Brentwood Library. Please let us know if you would like to become a Tree Tender and register today!

Forestbrooke Conservation Area - New Montour Trail Sign

The Forestbrooke Conservation Area now has its own sign at Milepost 6 on the Montour Trail near the Cliff Mine Road trailhead. The sign for this 6-acre wetlands area is provided in partnership with the Montour Trail Council. Note that the Cliff Mine Road bridge nearby will be under construction July-November this year. The trail will not be closed, but the road past the Cliff Mine trailhead will be closed.
