July, 2015

Hello District 6740 Rotarians,

We are just about finished with our first 30 days, and I hope yours has been grand.  In the few times I've spoken to various clubs and gatherings, I try to share a few words from our President Ravi Ravindran in his letter addressing his chosen theme.   President Ravi starts off by saying that our time on this earth is finite, and always shorter than we think.  He goes on to challenge us to not just continue our repetition, but to actively pursue new ideas and the giving of ourselves, our time, our talents.

It is my hope that each one of us will remember why we became Rotarians.  What attracted us to be here in the first place?   ...And when you remember why you became a Rotarian, TELL somebody else about it.   ...Invite somebody to join you.  August is Rotary MEMBERSHIP and EXTENSION Month.   ...Will you invite one of your coworkers to Rotary one day this month?   They may not accept, but just ASK.

Do YOU have an idea?   ...for a project?   ...for a fundraiser?   ...for a possible new member?  Will you send me a note?  Will you SHARE your ideas?

Did you know that we have 1,630+ Rotarians in our District?   Take a minute sometime this next month and check out the District website.        www.KyDistrict6740.org

Most of you know that I have and will keep in touch with your board members and your club president.  But this is not just THEIR year.   This is YOUR year.   I want to keep in touch with YOU, as well.  I am so looking forward to visiting with you and hope you will be able to attend when I visit your club.

BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD...be a gift to YOUR world.  It starts with one; it starts with ME and it starts with YOU.

Last weekend at Otterbein College near Columbus, District Governor Cindy Legg spearheaded a team of Rotarians who are making up the new district RYE (Rotary Youth Exchange) committee this year.  The 2015 RYE Convention, hosted by Ohio-Erie Youth Exchange, brought together out-bound students, their parents, and Rotarians from six different states plus Canada, for a final group meeting which focused on last-minute details before the students headed to their various countries for the year abroad.

Over 60 students, representing 10 Rotary districts, will be traveling to 24 different countries.  The students will be leaving the US between now and the end of August on what has to be the trip of a lifetime.  These students will live with a host family, attend school, and become totally immersed in their new culture.

District 6740's RYE team is led by RYE Chair BJ McClure (Florence) and includes In-bound Chair James Glass (Pikeville), Out-bound Chair Bill Perrine (Lexington) and Short Term Exchange Chair Jeanne Clark (Lexington).  Each member of the RYE team attended this conference and came away with new and exciting ideas to help grow our district's youth exchange program.

Some of the objectives for 2015-16 include:
* increasing the visibility of the  RYE opportunities
* increasing the number of in-bound and out-bound students as well as the number of short-term students.
*creating a RYE district succession plan
*establishing a policy in which out-bound students will be able to identify host families
*setting up quarterly district events for current in-bound and candidate out-bound students

Going forward, this RYE team is hoping to share their ideas with the clubs in our district beginning in August.  They are urging individual clubs to get involved with the Youth Exchange program in order to enrich the lives of our young people and promote peace through these life-changing exchanges.

Pikeville Rotary Club

Our Pikeville Rotary Club is excited to bring the Rotary Youth Fitness Challenge to the schools in our District.  We have partnered with our local YMCA to bring this program to the schools.  Last year, around 200 students participated in the program from three schools.  They lost a total of 76 inches off their waists and 331 pounds!! The students learned the benefits of proper eating and exercise.  They gained self-esteem and awareness that will have a life-long impact! Pikeville Area Family YMCA Director, Sherry Riddle is a member of the Pikeville Rotary Club and several of our members serve on their board. Many thanks to the Rotarians and YMCA employees that have worked so hard to make this project a success!!  The Pikeville Rotary Club is proud to sponsor  the YMCA in their endeavors to bring the Rotary Youth Fitness Challenge to as many schools as possible!
