ROTARY DOING GOOD IN THE WORLD
NEPAL
I have received emails from clubs asking what or how can they respond to the earthquake disaster in Nepal. I have proposed a $10,000 contribution to ShelterBox USA from the District Support Funds. After consulting with the District Foundation Committee, the District Finance Committee and receiving almost unanimous support for PDG's on the Council of Governor's, who responded to my proposal, the District will send $10,000 to ShelterBoxUSA for an immediate response to the disaster. I encourage clubs to follow the District lead.
I also consulted with Rotary International District Support staff and their response suggested ShelterBox for the immediate need.
ShelterBox has been a partner with Rotary International for many years and during the 2009-2010 year our District responded with over 80 ShelterBoxes for the earthquake in Haiti. Many in our district are familiar with ShelterBox and have confidence and trust in their work around the world. If you are asking, what is a ShelterBox, it is a box that contains a tent that will house a family of ten, along with all cooking utensils, stove, and a water purification system plus many other items. Each ShelterBox cost $1000. Folks who have gone to Haiti, and reported back several years after the earthquake saw ShelterBoxes that had been deployed for the earthquake victims, still in use. I know Rotarians who have worked with ShelterBox in disasters and cannot say enough good things about them. I personally have supported Shelterbox and have total confidence it what they do and represent. I highly recommend ShelterBox as a way to support the disaster relief in Nepal and encourage your favorable consideration.
Make checks payable to ShelterBoxUSA and please send donations to ShelterBoxUSA, 8374 Market Street #203, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34202. The web page for ShelterBox is www.shelterboxusa.org . As always if you have any questions you can contact me by email or on my cell at 859-446-1947 or home 859-371-0313.
If you send support for ShelterBox or to any other agency for Nepal, please let me know so that it can be recorded.

A Message From R.I. President, Gary C.K. Huang
Rotarians,
We express our profound sadness and extend our sympathies to all those affected by the devastation resulting from the 25 April deadly earthquake in Nepal. Rescue missions and emergency aid continue to arrive in Nepal for the 8 million people impacted by the massive 7.8 magnitude quake.
As we mourn the thousands of lost lives, Rotary joins many international agencies in providing immediate relief to survivors and mobilizing our expertise to support long-term recovery and rebuilding efforts.
How to help:
- District 3292, Nepal, has established a disaster relief fund to provide needed equipment and supplies to affected communities. Contact District Governor Kumar Piya for information about contributing to the fund.
- Rotary's service partner ShelterBox is working closely with Nepali Rotarians to coordinate immediate relief efforts. On Monday, 27 April, and Wednesday, 29 April, Rotarians greeted ShelterBox response teams in Nepal who will mobilize temporary housing and relief efforts. An initial 1,000 housing tents and 1,000 shelter kits will be distributed throughout affected communities. Two more ShelterBox relief teams and additional kits are ready to be deployed once further assessments are complete. Learn more about supporting ShelterBox's relief efforts.
- As with all disasters, the Rotary family may apply for global grants to support long-term recovery efforts in Nepal. Once immediate health, safety, and relief efforts have been addressed, work with local Nepali Rotary members and their international partners to develop projects within Rotary's six areas of focus.
Monitor the announcements section of My Rotary for more information as it becomes available and do not hesitate to contact relief@rotary.org with any questions.
Our thoughts are with our Nepali neighbors during this difficult time. Thank you for continuing to Light Up Rotary through your compassion and generosity.
Yours in Rotary,
Gary C.K. Huang K.R. Ravindran

A Message From Past District Governor, Jack McAllister
Our Rotary Foundation may not be on our minds, as Rotarians, very often. Yet, two recent obituaries I read in my newspaper brought our Rotary Foundation immediately to mind in a very interesting way.
The obituaries mentioned that the deceased was a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow. One of the deceased Rotarians had been a Rotarian for 26 years and only dropped out of Rotary due to a severe stroke he experienced 33 years before his death. Yet, it was important to each of these families that the Rotary membership and Paul Harris Fellow be mentioned in their loved ones' obituary. Being a Paul Harris Fellow was recognition for a $1,000 contribution to our Rotary Foundation. It was important because of the humanitarian effort to which it contributed.
Our Rotary Foundation is "doing good in the world" multiple times every day. In 2013-14, our Rotary Foundation supported 488 District Grants, 868 Global Grants and 18 Packaged Grants, by providing over $71 million in funding - all made possible by contributions from Rotarians.
Our District Grant for D6740 for 2013-14 funded nine (9) club projects. Monies for this District Grant came from the funds contributed to Rotary Foundation Annual Fund by Rotarians and clubs in our district in the 2010-11 Rotary year, half of which was returned to our district.
Our district, today, is working on three Global Grant applications in which clubs from our district could participate and to which they can contribute. These Global Grants and our District Grant are made possible through our Rotary Foundation.
Contributions can be made to the Rotary Foundation in three ways:
Go online to www.rotary.org and click on the "Donate" tab.
Rotary Direct - Rotary's recurring giving program allows you to donate via credit or debit card monthly, quarterly or annually. You can enroll online at www.rotary.org/give .
