Grayson Rotary Club Honors Three-Time Paul Harris Fellow

For the third time, 102 year old Charter Member Jack Strother was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest honor that a Rotarian can attain.  Jack has garnered these awards due to his continuing support of his club as well as the Rotary International Foundation since the Grayson club was founded in 1939!

Thanks, Jack!  You are an inspiration to us all!

DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU ARE A ROTARIAN?

By Michael W. Babb, Assistant Governor
District 6740, Area Four
District 6740 District Newsletter Publisher

I know why I am a Rotarian when I hear John Germ, Rotary International President Elect, speak of placing two magic drops of liquid in an infant child's mouth in Africa, and asking its mother what its sibling's name is who is crawling on the floor at their feet. I know why I am a Rotarian when John conveys that the mother answered that the child was not named because it is defective. It crawls because it has polio. I share John's belief that we c annot allow polio to continue to ravish the children of the world.

I know why I am a Rotarian when I see photographs of District 6740 Governor John Salyers gingerly holding a young Ethiopian child and administering the polio vaccine with the obvious blessing of the child's mother who looks on.

I know why I am a Rotarian when I hear Past District Governor Salim Najjar of District 6560 tell of the medical specialist team he led to Africa to teach local doctors how to repair heart defects that are so prevalent in young children there, not only giving them a fighting chance at living, but also leaving the doctors, nurses, and hospitals there with the knowledge to forever be able to successfully perform those dkifficult surgeries.

I know why I am a Rotarian when I witness over two hundred ninety Rotarians sacrifice their time and treasure to gather together to learn the skills necessary to lead their clubs into the new Rotary year as presidents, as well as how to become better Rotarians and individuals serving selflessly into the future.  I know why I am a Rotarian when I watch over two hundred veteran Rotarians share their knowledge with these presidents elect at the same event, all the while making the event an enjoyable learning experience, worthy of the Rotary brand.

I know why I am a Rotarian when I look at my community, my state, my country, and my entire world and realize that we have only just begun this wonderful process of service above self, and I look forward to the next service project to make things just a little better than they are today.

And so, I ask you. Do you know why you are a Rotarian?
